Background & History

Dong Linger purchases White Turtle after a farmwoman catches and sells him in the market. Though he initially hides in his shell and refuses to speak, Lu Shaolin forces him to reveal his intelligence by threatening to stew him. White Turtle identifies himself as a Spirit Turtle rather than an ordinary spirit creature, explains the divide between the human race, the Native Demon Race, and the Outer Regions Demon Race, and declares that his clan follows a survival-first philosophy of avoiding conflict and remaining hidden. 55

Lu Shaolin coerces White Turtle into revealing where River Demons hibernate, then reaches a bargain with him: White Turtle will locate demon caves, while Lu will take him to the Li River and feed him. Lu gives the nameless turtle the name “White Turtle.” The partnership begins uneasily, but White Turtle proves indispensable in locating underwater entrances, scouting dark caverns, identifying valuables, and guiding Lu through Blackwater River’s demon tunnels. 56 57 58

Their arrangement develops into genuine companionship after White Turtle remains near Lu during the battle with the Corpse Enchantress. Lu honors his promise to share Millennium Stone Milk, while White Turtle offers a Spirit Turtle-derived life-nourishing cultivation art in return. When Lu is pursued to the Black Sea by Corpse King Ying Ba, White Turtle calls upon his enormous Spirit Turtle ancestor with his blood. The ancestor rescues Lu, carries them across the Black Sea, and takes them to the Westernmost Continent. White Turtle later reunites with his parents at the Li River estuary for the first time since his birth. 201 202 230

White Turtle remains loyal through Lu’s apparent deaths and disappearances. Believing Lu had died sealing the Void Rift, he builds him a grave and visits it until Baxia transports him to Lu’s side. When Lu’s soul later shatters, White Turtle seeks Baxia’s aid and accepts the risk of extracting Lu’s True Spirit in an attempt to save him. 294 331

After gaining the ability to assume a human form, White Turtle accompanies Lu through further conflicts and eventually cultivates under Baxia in the Desolate Realm. He returns as a Demon Emperor and receives the name Gui Xuanwu before setting out with Lu once more. 328 447 466

Appearance

In his original form, White Turtle is a palm-sized, snow-white turtle with a faintly translucent shell that glows pale white like carved jade. He has small mung-bean eyes and speaks in a young boy’s voice. 55

White Turtle is arrogant, theatrical, and intensely proud of being a Spirit Turtle. He habitually calls himself “Turtle Lord,” boasts about his lineage, and reacts badly whenever Lu Shaolin calls him an ordinary turtle, a pet, or “Cheap Turtle.” 55 56 159

His clan’s survival philosophy makes him cautious and often cowardly in direct combat. He prefers scouting, bargaining, or hiding rather than fighting stronger enemies.
