Background

In his youth, Mu En was a world-shaking powerhouse. A battle with Du Bisou, the former Body Sect leader, shattered his spine, while the baleful aura of a Dragon Pill continued eroding his body afterward. These injuries left him unable to stand straight, shortened his lifespan, and made him the weakest of humanity’s three Limit Douluo despite his Rank 99 cultivation. 8 27

By the time Lu Yuan enters Shrek, Mu En conceals his identity as a frail dormitory caretaker who spends his days sunbathing beneath the freshmen dormitories. He immediately notices that Lu Yuan’s light energy is purer than his own Radiant Saint Dragon and Yan Shaozhe’s Radiant Phoenix, and suspects that the boy possesses Ultimate Light. Rather than intervene immediately, he chooses to observe Lu Yuan’s character and development. 8

Mu En’s observations develop into an informal friendship built around sunbathing, watching student conflicts, and discussing cultivation. After witnessing Lu Yuan’s talent, temperament, and self-created Eight-Part Light Wheel, Mu En decides that further observation is unnecessary and accepts him as his final disciple. 9 29 31

Mu En normally disguises himself as a dying old man in gray robes, with a severely stooped body, deeply lined face, and clouded eyes. His injuries often leave him using a wheelchair, though his weak appearance conceals the power of Shrek’s strongest figure. 8 87

Despite the burdens of leading Sea God’s Pavilion and his failing health, he retains a playful side.
