Awakening

Martial Souls are awakened through an awakening ceremony, in which Soul Power is channeled through an array to draw out the child’s inherent Martial Soul. The awakened form may be a mundane object, such as Blue Silver Grass, a hoe, or a carrot, or an exceptionally powerful beast-type manifestation. 1

Innate Soul Power is tested with a crystal ball after awakening. Tang San and Su Chen both test as possessing Innate Full Soul Power, a rare level of natural talent. 1

• A Martial Soul’s recorded identity can differ from its true nature. Su Yuntao records Su Chen’s Martial Soul as the Three-Legged Fire Crow, while Su Chen knows it is actually the Great Sun Golden Crow. 1 2
• Martial Soul quality can exert direct suppression over weaker Martial Souls. The Great Sun Golden Crow suppresses Su Yuntao’s Lone Wolf and forces Xiao Chenyu out of Lone Wolf Possession. 1 6

Martial Soul Possession

Martial Soul Possession manifests a Martial Soul’s power through the Soul Master’s body and is a standard combat state.

• Su Yuntao’s Lone Wolf Possession transforms him into a wolfman and raises his Soul Rings. 1
• Great Sun Golden Crow Possession gives Su Chen golden-red flame wings, enhanced speed, flight, and Golden Crow True Flame. 13
• The ability to fly immediately after possession is unusual for a low-level bird-type Soul Master; Gao Lu notes that most bird Martial Souls do not gain flight until three rings. 13
• Lunar Jade Rabbit Possession turns Su Chen’s hair white, gives him crimson eyes, manifests rabbit ears and a moon mark, and produces a cold, ethereal aura. 32

Soul Rings and Soul Skills

Soul Rings are absorbed from slain Soul Beasts and grant Soul Skills. Their age affects both the danger of absorption and the potential strength of the resulting skill.

A Twin Martial Soul wielder possesses two awakened Martial Souls. Su Chen’s are the Great Sun Golden Crow and Lunar Jade Rabbit; he conceals the latter until revealing it at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. 1 32
