Ch. 81Opening Hell Road

Key plot points

  • Dugu Feng leaves Slaughter City standing, reasoning that it contains dangerous outlaws who might otherwise prey on civilians. He still intends to pursue the Asura God’s godhood, which he thinks will be faster to obtain than the Sea God’s.
  • After reaching his hundredth arena victory, Dugu Feng faces nine opponents at once and kills them effortlessly with his wind and Soul Power.
  • The King of Slaughter sacrifices everyone in the arena to open Hell Road, then tells Dugu Feng to pass through it and earn the title of Slaughter God.
  • Inside Hell Road, Dugu Feng uses the Forging Hammer and its Volcano God power to absorb the fire, poison, and other energy in the magma, treating the deadly environment as a source of strength.
  • When the Three-Headed Bat King attacks, Dugu Feng unleashes Volcano’s Fury. The blast devastates Hell Road and shakes Slaughter City. Dugu Feng jumps into the magma to avoid the shock wave, while the King of Slaughter realizes he may be “God-Chosen.”

Character developments and interactions

  • Dugu Feng remains calm and pragmatic: he refuses to destroy Slaughter City for the sake of those beyond its walls, but has no intention of showing mercy to its ruler. His confidence grows as he turns Hell Road’s hazards into fuel for his power.
  • The King of Slaughter fears Dugu Feng but avoids confronting him directly, judging that a fight could destroy the city and leave him vulnerable. He sacrifices the arena’s contestants to trigger Hell Road, then watches from the shadows as Dugu Feng battles the Bat King.
  • Dugu Feng and the contestants have no real contest: his brief invitation to attack together ends with all nine being killed almost instantly.
  • Dugu Feng and the Three-Headed Bat King clash when the creature attacks during Dugu Feng’s cultivation; Dugu Feng counters with a devastating divine technique.

Significant themes

  • Containment versus destruction: Slaughter City is vile, yet keeping its inhabitants confined may protect ordinary people.
  • Power and ambition: Dugu Feng pursues divine power on his own terms, prioritizing speed and strength over patience.
  • Turning danger into strength: Rather than merely surviving Hell Road, Dugu Feng absorbs its lethal energies and makes them part of his arsenal.
  • Fear and expendability: The King of Slaughter treats everyone in the city as disposable, while fearing the one opponent he cannot control.

Ch. 82Slaying the Nine-Headed Bat King, Part One

Plot points and events

  • After destroying the Hell Road with Volcano’s Fury, Dugu Feng encounters the wounded Ten-Headed Fierce Yang Serpent. He threatens it with death, but it refuses to submit and retreats into the magma while he absorbs the Three-Headed Bat King’s Soul Ring.
  • During the absorption, the Asura God offers Dugu Feng the chance to inherit his divine position. Dugu Feng accepts and learns his first trial: free Tang Chen from the Nine-Headed Bat King’s possession, restore his senses, and obtain the Asura God Sword. He must do so without relying on the Forging Hammer’s divine power.
  • Dugu Feng gains the Soul Skill Woeful Poison Clone, which creates two copies of himself that can use his Woeful Poison Body but not Soul Skills. He hopes that raising the skill to the hundred-thousand-year level will strengthen the clones.
  • Instead of leaving Slaughter City, Dugu Feng returns to confront the Nine-Headed Bat King. Their fight begins with the Bat King striking with the Asura Demon Sword. Dugu Feng uses his venomous armor, Toad Bone Armor, Ice Soul Needles, poison, and Spatial Severing to withstand and counter the attacks.
  • Dugu Feng’s poison incapacitates nearby guards, prompting the Bat King to order them away. Dugu Feng reveals a Poison Arrow Barrage fusion skill and fires at him; the chapter ends as the Bat King’s sword fails to stop the arrow as easily as before.

Character developments

  • Dugu Feng shows growing control over Soul Power, tactical confidence, and a willingness to face the Bat King despite the danger. He accepts the Asura God’s trial and fights under the restriction that he cannot use his Forging Hammer’s divine power.
  • The Ten-Headed Fierce Yang Serpent is frightened by Dugu Feng’s strength but remains too proud and ferocious to submit.
  • The Nine-Headed Bat King, still occupying Tang Chen’s body, becomes openly hostile when Dugu Feng challenges him. He recognizes the danger of Dugu Feng’s poison and keeps the guards from interfering.

Significant themes

  • Strength and succession: The Asura God makes power the measure of worthiness, requiring Dugu Feng to prove himself through combat.
  • Control versus instinct: Dugu Feng attempts to command a powerful beast, while its ferocious nature prevents it from surrendering.
  • Resourcefulness under limits: Unable to use the Forging Hammer’s divine power, Dugu Feng relies on his other abilities and carefully planned tactics.
  • Possession and mortality: Tang Chen’s recovery is tied to the Bat King’s defeat, but the Asura God warns that Tang Chen may die once his senses return.

Character interactions

  • Dugu Feng threatens the serpent and leaves it to choose between submission and death; it withdraws rather than attack.
  • The Asura God explains the trial and its restrictions, and Dugu Feng accepts without hesitation.
  • Dugu Feng provokes the Nine-Headed Bat King by invoking Tang Chen’s identity, triggering their duel.
  • During the fight, the Bat King orders the guards to retreat after Dugu Feng’s poison incapacitates them, leaving the two opponents to face each other alone.

Ch. 83Slaying the Nine-Headed Bat King, Part Two

Plot points and events

  • Dugu Feng’s poisoned arrow wounds the Nine-Headed Bat King, and the two exchange powerful attacks. The Bat King tears apart Dugu Feng’s Magma Domain and nearly overwhelms him with the Asura Demon Sword and Clear Sky Hammer.
  • Dugu Feng turns the fight with Ice-Fire Toad Palm, then uses Nether Stealth and his Ice Fire Poison Thunder Lance to pierce the Bat King. His poison weakens the creature and disrupts its control over Tang Chen’s body.
  • Dugu Feng explains that the Bat King has taken Tang Chen’s body by force and may die if the body dies. Weakened by the battle, the Bat King loses control, is expelled from Tang Chen, and is destroyed by Dugu Feng’s lance.
  • Tang Chen regains his senses but is near death from Dugu Feng’s poison. He gives Dugu Feng the Clear Sky Token to return to the Clear Sky Sect and asks him to tell Bo Saixi of his death. Tang Chen then takes his own life.
  • Dugu Feng takes up the Asura Demon Sword and completes the eighth trial, earning the Slaughter Domain. He is then offered the ninth trial: confronting his inner demon—or abandoning it to inherit the God of Forging and Volcanoes.

Character developments and interactions

  • Dugu Feng proves his strength and tactical skill, combining poison, teleportation, spatial attacks, and close combat to defeat the Bat King. He also shows compassion by agreeing to Tang Chen’s final requests.
  • Tang Chen returns to himself, acknowledges Dugu Feng’s exceptional ability, and accepts responsibility for his fate. He entrusts Dugu Feng with his token and message to Bo Saixi.
  • The Nine-Headed Bat King shifts from confidence to desperation as Dugu Feng’s poison weakens it and Tang Chen begins to resist its control.
  • Dugu Feng and Tang Chen share a final exchange of respect: Tang Chen recognizes Dugu Feng’s talent, while Dugu Feng honors his last wishes.

Significant themes

  • Strength and vulnerability: Even a near-legendary fighter can be brought down by poison, exhaustion, and a compromised body.
  • Identity and inner conflict: Tang Chen’s struggle against the Bat King foreshadows Dugu Feng’s more dangerous upcoming trial, where the enemy will be another version of himself.
  • Legacy and duty: Tang Chen entrusts Dugu Feng with obligations to his sect and Bo Saixi, while Dugu Feng must choose between continuing his trial and accepting another divine inheritance.
