When Ning Rongrong saw how indifferent he was, she felt another surge of frustration and secretly ground her teeth.
Did this blockhead even know what it meant to cherish a delicate flower?
Ning Fengzhi took in everything before turning to Chen Xin.
Chen Xin gave a slight nod, his expression carrying a hint of relief.
The direct-line young disciples in the sect had always indulged Ning Rongrong in everything, spoiling the girl beyond all restraint.
It was rare to see the girl so curious about someone of the opposite sex her age. Moreover, Gu Feng had an excellent temperament and handled matters calmly. Having him keep her in line would be a perfect opportunity to temper Rongrong's character.
Ning Fengzhi gathered his thoughts and looked at Gu Feng, speaking solemnly.
"Gu Feng, since that is the case, I'll leave Rongrong in your care."
"She is usually lively and willful. If she throws a tantrum on the road, feel free to discipline her for me. There is no need to hold back."
Gu Feng cupped his hands and replied, "Rest assured, Uncle Ning. This junior will keep her safe."
Chen Xin also stepped forward and warned him in a deep voice,
"Kid, be careful on the road. We'll be waiting for you at the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect."
Gu Feng nodded and cupped his hands.
"Rest assured, Your Excellency Sword Douluo."
Ning Fengzhi took a smooth white jade token from his Soul Tool and handed it to Gu Feng.
"This is the sect's token. Any Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect business in Heaven Dou City will obey your orders upon seeing it."
Gu Feng accepted the token and placed it inside the storage ring on his finger.
Once everything had been explained, Ning Fengzhi and Chen Xin did not linger. Their figures rose into the air and turned into streaks of light that vanished beyond the horizon.
Only Gu Feng and Ning Rongrong remained in the clearing.
Ning Rongrong let out a long breath, finally relaxing as she patted her chest.
"Phew! We finally got Dad and Grandpa Sword out of the way!"
She turned around, skipped over to Gu Feng with her hands behind her back, and tilted her head up at him.
"Gu Feng, shall we head to Heaven Dou City now?"
Gu Feng looked Ning Rongrong over.
Several places on the white dress she wore had been torn by branches. Its hem and her white short boots were covered in mud, leaving her looking rather bedraggled.
"Rongrong, let's rest for the night in a town outside first. You need to change out of those clothes."
Ning Rongrong lowered her head and tugged at the torn hem of her dress. Her little face reddened as she hurriedly nodded.
"Okay, okay. They're filthy. I'm so uncomfortable I can barely stand it."
The two quickly left the forest's outskirts and reached a nearby supply town before sunset.
Gu Feng found a clean inn in town and rented two adjoining rooms.
After settling Ning Rongrong in, he went out alone and headed to the town's shops to purchase supplies.
The ten-cubic-meter storage ring was extremely spacious. In one go, Gu Feng purchased three wilderness tents, a large amount of preserved jerky and dried provisions, more than a dozen water skins, as well as various common bruise powders and insect-repelling medicine.
He had been short on money before, needing to deliberate over every purchase. Now that he had one hundred thousand Gold Soul Coins and a storage ring, he naturally had to prepare thoroughly.
By the time he returned to the inn, Ning Rongrong had already finished bathing. She had changed into a new set of light cyan casual clothes, her long hair draped over her shoulders and carrying a clean, faint scent of soapberry.
"Gu Feng, you bought so much stuff. You've packed that storage ring completely full."
Ning Rongrong leaned closer and peered inside curiously.
Gu Feng pulled the door shut. "We need it for the journey. Get some rest early. We leave at dawn tomorrow."
"Got it, Mr. Housekeeper."
Ning Rongrong stuck out her tongue at him, then turned and returned to her own room.
Early the next morning, when the sky had only just begun to brighten.
The two left the small town and headed north along the official road.
They had not walked for even half an hour before Ning Rongrong slowed down and tugged at the little cloth bag on her body.
"Gu Feng, why don't we hire a carriage?"
She could not understand it. The Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect was enormously wealthy, and whenever she went out, she always traveled in a luxurious carriage. When had she ever had to rush along on her own two legs like this?
Gu Feng did not stop walking as he turned his head and answered.
"Traveling is cultivation too. As you walk, gather your Soul Power in the meridians of your legs. It will not only increase your speed, but also help refine your precise control over Soul Power."
Ning Rongrong blinked and followed his instructions with half-belief and half-doubt.
She mobilized the Soul Power within her body and carefully pressed the flow of energy down through her meridians toward her legs.
Her steps truly became much lighter. With a single stride, she could cover twice the distance she normally could.
"Oh, it really works!"
Ning Rongrong immediately became interested and skipped forward a few quick steps.
But before she could be happy for long, cyan light flowed beneath Gu Feng's feet. His entire body glided lightly forward, instantly opening a gap of more than thirty meters.
Ning Rongrong hurried after him at a jog, fine sweat beginning to bead on her forehead.
"Hey! Gu Feng! Why are you walking so fast? Wait for me!"
Gu Feng slowed by half a step ahead of her and glanced back.
"My martial soul has the wind attribute. I'm naturally skilled at controlling the wind, so I'm faster."
Ning Rongrong gritted her teeth in anger and desperately increased her Soul Power output to chase after him.
"But you can't just leave me behind by myself!"
Gu Feng did not answer. He merely slowed his pace slightly, always remaining five or six steps ahead of her.
Whenever Ning Rongrong felt she was about to collapse and wanted to stop for a rest, she would look up and see Gu Feng turning back to look at her.
His faintly amused expression seemed to say:
The little genius of the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect is already unable to keep going?
A little flame instantly flared up in Ning Rongrong's heart.
In the sect, Grandpa Sword and Grandpa Bone praised her every day as a genius seen only once in a century. Even her father never stopped praising her talent.
And now she was actually being outdone by a commoner Soul Master her own age?
She absolutely could not lose!
Ning Rongrong pressed her lips together tightly. Her legs felt as heavy as lead, and most of her Soul Power had been exhausted, yet she stubbornly endured without making a sound.
Gu Feng watched her, somewhat surprised.
He had originally thought this pampered young lady would throw a tantrum and burst into tears after enduring at most two hours. He had not expected her to possess such fierce unwillingness to admit defeat deep down.
As the sky gradually darkened, a small relay-station town appeared ahead along the official road.
The two entered an inn. The moment Ning Rongrong crossed the threshold, her entire body went limp, and she collapsed onto a long bench, too lazy to move even a finger.
"I can't do this anymore... My legs are going to break..."
Ning Rongrong lay sprawled over the table, her little face pale as she gulped down breaths of air.
After dinner, Gu Feng followed Ning Rongrong into her room.
Seeing the girl sprawled on the bed and groaning nonstop, Gu Feng shut the door and walked over.
"Lie face down. I'll loosen up your muscles."
Ning Rongrong warily rolled over and pulled the blanket tightly around herself.
"Y-you... what are you trying to do? This young lady is a respectable person!"
Gu Feng was speechless. "What are you thinking? Your muscles are severely tense. If they aren't loosened up, you won't even be able to get out of bed tomorrow."
Ning Rongrong hesitated. Feeling the aching, stabbing soreness in her legs, she ultimately buried her face in the pillow and obediently lay flat on the bed.
