This was not Russell's first time entering a Mine, but it was his first time going this deep underground.
Along the way, he stayed close to Hook-nosed. The latter was the squad leader and the most valuable life among them; following him was safer.
As the nineteen-man squad continued deeper, the wires and lights overhead came to an end. The Mine passage was pitch-black, and they could only rely on the lamps on their Helmets for illumination.
Russell remembered Mine foreman Leon's warning: Mine passages without wires were dangerous. Once lost in one, it was hard to make it out alive, even for experienced veteran miners.
In complete darkness, a person's sense of direction failed. You thought you were walking straight, but in reality, you were just going in circles.
"Captain, we didn't bring a guide..." Russell discovered something alarming. There was not even an old miner in the squad. This was far too reckless.
"Don't worry. I wouldn't joke with my own life. Trust your teammates; none of them are ordinary people." Hook-nosed fell back a step and pointed at a soldier leading the way. "Since you're not an official member yet and haven't signed the confidentiality agreement, I can only tell you so much. His codename is 'Map.' With him here, we'll never get lost."
The codenames were related to their abilities. After a moment's thought, Russell guessed Map's power. Since there was no "cannon" after "Map," it could be inferred that he lacked offensive capability. Even so, it was an extremely practical support ability, making him indispensable when the team carried out special missions.
What should my codename be...
Shapeshifter?
Man of a Thousand Faces?
After another five minutes of walking—or roughly five minutes, since Russell had silently counted to around three hundred—they arrived at their destination.
