In ancient Hebrew, it meant a temple or sanctuary, the place where the Creator dwelled in Jewish scriptures.

In the setting of The Matrix, Zion was humanity's last Survivor Settlement, located deep underground.

An old saying went: Those who planted trees came before, while those who followed enjoyed the shade!

Conversely, those who dug pits came before, while those who followed suffered!

Back then, humanity had covered the sky in black clouds to cut off the machines' primary energy source. The machines were completely unaffected, while humanity itself lost its energy supply and had to live underground, relying on geothermal power to survive.

That reaction was only natural, because life in Zion was simply too hard.

It was ruined, backward, and short on resources. People lived in limited spaces, no different from being locked in prison.
