"Russell speaking. Who is this?"
"Officer Russell, it's Max. I remember you saved my number, and even added a note."
Hearing that, Russell glanced at the caller ID. The note read: "Unlucky Girl." Calmly ignoring that minor detail, he continued, "What is it? I'm at work. It's not convenient to take calls."
"Can you tell me where you are right now?"
"Manhattan!"
"So, here's the thing..."
Over the phone, Max embellished the story and rambled on with a whole lot of nonsense, making Russell's expression change repeatedly.
"A tall, middle-aged hitman with a little girl around ten years old, and the hitman might be a perverted kidnapper... Max, are you serious?"
"Uh, he might not be a hitman, and he might not be a kidnapper either. It's just suspicion, that's all."
Max let out an awkward laugh. After a pause, she continued, "But we can't rule it out. You know, this is New York. With such a huge population, the odds of freaks showing up are pretty high."
"I understand. I'll head back once I finish what I'm doing. As for you and Caroline, don't let your curiosity get the better of you and visit that family. Stay on the first floor and behave."
After hanging up, Russell was utterly speechless. It was like someone had handed him a pillow just as he was getting sleepy—perfect timing.
He had just been wondering where to find a big-man-and-little-girl duo when they showed up right on his doorstep and were spotted by the Unlucky Sisters.
Was he too lucky, or were those two unlucky girls just too unlucky?
Leon the hitman could wait for now. Rushing wouldn't help anyway. With New York's terrible traffic, it would take some time to get from Manhattan back to Brooklyn.
