Ch. 21A Safe Journey
Chapter Summary: “A Safe Journey”
Key Plot Points and Events
- Jiang Kaitai, empowered by the Blood Fiend Power from the Seven Kill Stele, overwhelms Murong Qing and forces him into retreat.
- Murong Qing activates the Murong Clan’s secret art, Hidden Dragon Burning Gold Formula, sacrificing the health of his meridians to unleash tremendous true qi. He combines it with the clan’s Dragon City Swordsmanship, weakening Jiang Kaitai and restoring some of Jiang’s clarity.
- The two fight for roughly fifteen minutes, gradually exhausting themselves. Jiang’s Blood Fiend Power begins to fade and the Source of Killing Intent threatens to backlash against him, while Murong Qing’s meridians begin to crack from overuse of his secret art.
- Jiang attempts to break Murong Qing’s resolve by warning that becoming crippled would leave him unable to benefit from the Murong Clan’s divine artifacts. Murong nearly wavers but ultimately refuses to surrender, believing the clan would still protect him.
- Both men enter a final war of attrition. Murong Qing secretly prepares to use Starshift, the Murong Clan’s one-use Divine-Artifact Avatar, to redirect Jiang’s final attack.
- Chen Yuan takes the Fire Dragon Pill, dramatically increasing his strength, and reveals that he has been waiting for both opponents to become exhausted.
- Chen first attacks Jiang Kaitai with his Swan-Startling Saber Strike, piercing his chest and then beheading him to ensure he cannot survive through the Blood Fiend Power.
- Murong Qing is shocked by Chen’s betrayal and attacks him. Chen uses the Fire Dragon Pill’s power to unleash increasingly formidable saber techniques, including Wave-Treading Slash and Autumn Wind Slash.
- Murong Qing destroys Chen’s ordinary saber with his superior Dragon-Pattern Azuregold Sword, but his own meridians are collapsing. Chen closes the distance, crushes Murong’s sword hand, then destroys his other hand before he can activate Starshift.
- Chen steals the Divine-Artifact Avatar, crushes Murong’s knees, and deliberately leaves him completely crippled.
- Chen explains that Starshift can reflect external power such as true qi, but cannot counter his close-quarters physical attacks, making the artifact useless against him.
Character Developments
- Chen Yuan reveals his true opportunistic nature. He has carefully observed both enemies, waited for the ideal moment, and betrayed them once they were too weakened to resist. His methods show increasing confidence, ruthlessness, and strategic calculation.
- Jiang Kaitai loses control of the situation despite his immense Blood Fiend strength. His attempt to manipulate Murong Qing fails, and his inability to anticipate Chen’s betrayal leads directly to his death.
- Murong Qing demonstrates determination and loyalty to his clan, but also reveals personal ambition and fear of becoming useless. His reliance on many different martial disciplines is criticized as broad but shallow, and his overuse of the Hidden Dragon Burning Gold Formula ultimately destroys his meridians.
- Chen’s assessment of Murong Qing establishes that Murong is talented but lacks specialization, preventing him from reaching the pinnacle of any single martial path.
Significant Themes
- Betrayal and shifting alliances: Neither Jiang nor Murong expects Chen, their apparent subordinate or ally, to turn against them. The chapter emphasizes that survival depends on recognizing hidden motives.
- Patience and opportunism: Chen wins not through overwhelming force at the beginning, but by allowing stronger enemies to exhaust one another before striking.
- The cost of power: Jiang’s Blood Fiend Power threatens to consume him, while Murong’s secret art damages his meridians. Both gain temporary strength at the expense of their future.
- Specialization versus excess: Murong’s mastery of many techniques is portrayed as inferior to focusing on one path and perfecting it.
- Pragmatism and ruthlessness: Chen kills Jiang decisively and cripples Murong rather than taking risks, reflecting his refusal to leave potential threats alive.
- Physical force versus supernatural techniques: Murong’s Starshift is powerful against projected energy but ineffective against Chen’s direct physical attacks, showing the importance of matching an ability to the situation.
Character Interactions
- Jiang taunts Murong by suggesting that the Murong Clan would exploit him if he became crippled, targeting his fear of losing status and usefulness.
- Murong rejects Jiang’s psychological manipulation and counters that the clan would still reward his sacrifice while Jiang would die without a body.
- Chen’s sudden attack on Jiang exposes the false trust between them; Jiang’s confusion comes from believing Chen remains the obedient “Third Brother.”
- Murong initially assumes Chen’s arrival benefits him, then reacts with disbelief and fury when Chen attacks him as well.
- Chen defeats Murong through close combat rather than saberplay, exploiting the exhaustion caused by Murong’s secret art and the limitations of Starshift.
