Ch. 601You Guard the South Sea, I Enter Legend
Chapter Summary
Plot and Key Events
- Lin Xiaosu and Bloodmark discuss the looming threat to Daxia. Because Daxia preserves the ancient cultural lineage shared by the Underground Bridge Realm, the Primordial World, and other civilizations, it is likely to become the main target of future invasions.
- Though both commanders feel uncertain about the future, Bloodmark reminds Lin Xiaosu that soldiers do not need to see hope to fight for their homeland. They agree to continue defending Daxia without regret: Bloodmark will guard the South Sea, while Lin Xiaosu will eventually carry on the struggle elsewhere.
- Lin Xiaosu reveals that he intends to resign as commander of the Tashan Defense Line and travel to Three Heavens. He wants to determine whether the prophecy concerning Civilization Rupture has finally come to pass.
- After resting on Bloodmark’s warship, Lin Xiaosu spends one final night with Ding Ruoshui. Their earlier plan to spend three days and three nights together and conceive a child is reduced to a single night because of the worsening crisis.
- The next morning, Lin Xiaosu leaves Ding Ruoshui and departs with Wing Blade toward the northwest. He reaches Duanliang Snow Mountain, where he discovers the hidden formation leading to Three Heavens.
- Using several techniques from the Heaven-Earth Formation-Breaking Hand, Lin Xiaosu bypasses the formation’s illusions and enters the ancient realm.
- Three Heavens appears to be an immense immortal city filled with magnificent jade palaces, towers, and halls. However, everything is abandoned and decaying: fallen leaves, weeds, rotten earth, and absolute silence reveal that the realm has been dead for an immeasurably long time.
- Lin Xiaosu finds a small temple containing a green lamp and encounters Daoist Lu Yun, who appears as a very short, blind man—the same figure foretold by Gu Jian Youchen.
- Lu Yun recognizes Lin Xiaosu and reveals that Lin Xiaosu has arrived too late—not merely by a few years, but by a million years. The chapter ends as Lin Xiaosu asks how Three Heavens was supposed to save the world.
Character Developments
- Lin Xiaosu: Moves beyond his role as a frontline commander and chooses to pursue the truth behind the ancient prophecy. His decision shows courage, sacrifice, and a willingness to abandon ordinary responsibilities for the sake of humanity’s survival. He also demonstrates mastery of formation-breaking techniques and emotional restraint as he leaves behind both his comrades and Ding Ruoshui.
- Bloodmark: Acts as Lin Xiaosu’s trusted brother and emotional equal. Though he privately admits the difficulty of seeing hope, he accepts responsibility for defending the South Sea and supports Lin Xiaosu’s pursuit of legend.
- Ding Ruoshui: Shares an intimate farewell with Lin Xiaosu, revealing both affection and sadness over their inability to live normally. Her desire to have a child with him emphasizes the personal future they are forced to sacrifice.
- Wing Blade: Is shown to be more than transportation; she is an autonomous protector and a final safeguard for Lin Xiaosu’s parents. Lin Xiaosu sends her away before entering Three Heavens so she can defend them if necessary.
- Daoist Lu Yun: Reappears as the mysterious guardian of Three Heavens. His diminished, blind form and cryptic statements suggest that he has endured an extremely long period of isolation and decay. His knowledge establishes that Three Heavens’ glory belongs to a distant, nearly forgotten past.
Character Interactions
- Lin Xiaosu and Bloodmark share a solemn brotherly vow: each will protect the other’s remains if one dies. Their conversation balances despair with military duty and mutual loyalty.
- Lin Xiaosu and Ding Ruoshui’s farewell combines intimacy with tragedy. Their attempt to preserve a personal future contrasts with the overwhelming historical crisis outside.
- Lin Xiaosu and Daoist Lu Yun meet as seeker and ancient witness. Lin Xiaosu approaches him with respect, while Lu Yun confirms that Lin Xiaosu is extraordinary but has reached Three Heavens far later than intended.
Significant Themes
- Duty despite hopelessness: The chapter argues that people can fight honorably even when they cannot see a path to victory.
- Sacrifice of personal happiness: Lin Xiaosu’s separation from Ding Ruoshui reflects how war and impending catastrophe destroy ordinary hopes such as family and domestic life.
- Civilization and ancestral identity: Daxia’s cultural continuity makes it the symbolic “ancestral court” sought by rival civilizations, placing it at the center of the coming conflict.
- The collapse of glorious civilizations: Three Heavens embodies the contrast between supreme achievement and total extinction. Its magnificent ruins suggest that even the most powerful civilization can disappear.
- Prophecy and disillusionment: Lin Xiaosu seeks the promised savior of humanity, only to learn that Three Heavens may have failed or vanished long ago. The chapter builds suspense around whether its ancient purpose can still be fulfilled.
- Time and lateness: Lu Yun’s statement that Lin Xiaosu is a million years too late introduces the possibility that the current crisis is not the beginning of Civilization Rupture, but the aftermath of an ancient catastrophe.
