Ch. 801Black Shadow
Chapter Summary: “Black Shadow”
Key Plot Points and Events
- At night, Shen Luo studies the Heavenly Register’s phantom image through his Divine Thought. He observes the increasingly clear star trajectories and begins reconstructing a Stellar Formation.
- Shen Luo realizes that mastering this formation may allow him to summon his dream cultivation at will. However, he avoids activating it because doing so could consume the small amount of lifespan he has remaining.
- Ghost General Zhao Feiji detects a concealed undead or spirit creature beneath the floor. Shen Luo orders him to capture it alive.
- The creature escapes downstairs, breaks through the building’s door, and flees into the valley. Zhao Feiji pursues it, while Shen Luo follows after discovering the commotion.
- The intruder appears as a highly elusive pitch-black shadow. It uses black smoke, aerial movement, and eventually the Earth-Escaping Technique to evade capture.
- Shen Luo manages to tear off a tuft of its black fur before it burrows underground. From the fur’s aura, he detects demonic energy and concludes that the creature may have been sent specifically to investigate him.
- Because Mount Putuo is not an appropriate place for Zhao Feiji, a ghost, to act openly, Shen Luo recalls him into the Cosmic Bag and takes over the pursuit himself.
- Using an Earth-Escape Talisman, Shen Luo follows the shadow underground. Although the creature is extremely skilled at escaping through earth, it eventually begins to tire while Shen Luo continues the chase with a second talisman.
Character Developments
- Shen Luo: His control over the Heavenly Register has improved significantly, allowing his Divine Thought to enter and move through it without relying on the Jade Pillow’s projection. He remains cautious about using the Stellar Formation because of its potential cost to his lifespan. He also demonstrates tactical judgment by taking over the pursuit personally rather than exposing Zhao Feiji’s ghostly identity.
- Zhao Feiji: His strength has risen to the Late Out-of-Body Stage after absorbing Lin Da’s remnant soul, and his refined Netherworld Ghost Eyes greatly enhance his ability to detect hidden ghosts and Yin Fiends. Though powerful and loyal, he is unable to capture the shadow because of its extraordinary evasiveness.
Significant Themes
- Power versus cost: Shen Luo’s dream cultivation offers tremendous power, but activating it may consume his remaining lifespan, forcing him to restrain himself.
- Investigation and hidden threats: The mysterious creature’s stealth, demonic energy, and deliberate intrusion suggest that Shen Luo is being watched or investigated by an unknown enemy.
- Adaptability and strategy: Both Shen Luo and the shadow rely on changing tactics—flight, smoke, concealment, and Earth-Escaping—to gain the advantage.
- Limits of power and identity: Zhao Feiji’s abilities are impressive, but his nature as a ghost restricts what he can safely do within Mount Putuo.
Character Interactions
- Shen Luo communicates mentally with Zhao Feiji and relies on his detection abilities.
- He instructs Zhao Feiji to capture the intruder without killing it, showing his desire to learn its identity and purpose.
- When Zhao Feiji’s pursuit fails, Shen Luo coordinates a flanking strategy with him.
- Shen Luo later dismisses Zhao Feiji from the chase to avoid drawing attention to a ghost acting on Mount Putuo, then personally pursues the shadow underground.
