Background and Status
Knights emerged when warriors surpassed the physical limits of ordinary humans and awakened Battle Aura. The power was later systematized, with War God Edmund credited as a major figure in its spread. A warrior must first reach the Fourth Level before Battle Aura can be awakened, though the time and conditions required differ between individuals. 247
Reaching Fifth Level does not automatically secure a noble title. A prospective knight also needs wealth, land or a fief, and recognition from a superior lord or ruler. Knightly armor alone can cost the equivalent of fifty cattle, making the rank difficult to sustain without resources. 3 328 572
A formally invested Knight is part of the continent-wide noble class and may dine with any noble. Knights commonly receive feudal benefices, serve as military officers, and may maintain estates and retainers. 135 328
Noble Training
Children from knightly or noble families traditionally follow a long preparation route:
- From age eight, they serve in households ranked above their own and receive basic education. 572
- At approximately fourteen, those with suitable aptitude may become apprentice squires and begin specialized knight training. 572
- At eighteen, they may undertake examinations for formal knighthood. 572
- Fifth-Level Battle Aura remains the indispensable martial qualification regardless of social background. 572
Abilities & Skills
Battle Aura
Battle Aura is the defining power of a Knight. It is described as strength produced after a warrior breaks beyond ordinary bodily limits, enabling feats that conventional training alone cannot achieve. 3 247
- Allows knights to wear and maneuver effectively in heavy armor that would hinder ordinary warriors. 104 192
- Can erupt around the body or weapon to increase destructive force in combat. 271 313
- May manifest as wind, fire, earth, water, light, darkness, or rarer attributes. 247
- Wind, fire, earth, and water are considered broadly promising because they correspond to pervasive elements of the world. 247
- Light Battle Aura is common among Knights of the Lord of Radiance, while Dark Battle Aura is associated with Dark Knights. 247
Armored Cavalry Warfare
Knights are among the most dangerous battlefield cavalry. Coordinated charges by mounted knights can break larger formations through armor, momentum, lances, and Battle Aura. 104 189 257
- Knight-led cavalry charges were decisive against demon armies, trampling and scattering large numbers of Imps. 248 257
- Lances are especially effective when knights exploit openings created by spellcasters or infantry. 248
- Knights can continue fighting on foot with swords when mounts or lances are lost. 257
- Heavy armor requires strong horses and a warrior capable of bearing its weight without losing mobility. 104
Holy Knights
Holy Knights are religious knights who serve divine will and Church orders rather than the conventional noble knightly code. They require Fifth-Level advancement and wield sacred Battle Aura, along with limited divine blessings and healing. 181
- At Fifth Level, a Holy Knight receives holy power and Holy Battle Aura. 270
- At Sixth Level, some Holy Knights gain minor divine spells such as Cure Minor Wounds, Divine Grace, and Evil-Defending Formation. 270
- The Holy Sword Knights of the Radiance Church follow a creed of absolute obedience and are expected not to retreat when ordered into battle. 283
Equipment and Heraldry
- Knight armor — Formal full-body armor may weigh about fifty-five pounds and can resist ordinary crossbow bolts and some magical attacks. 247
- High Knight armor — Superior armor intended for Levels 11–15 may incorporate mithril, ornate construction, and greater protection; one documented suit weighs sixty-six pounds. 247
- Warhorse — Necessary for mounted combat and for carrying the combined weight of knight, armor, and weapons. 104
- Lance and longsword — Standard battlefield weapons, used in charges and close combat. 248 257
- Lineage emblem — Knight armor may bear a family crest, marking its owner’s noble lineage and inheritance. 247

Knight Orders and Tournaments
Knight Orders organize knights into hereditary, religious, or noble military formations. Such orders preserve equipment, crests, training, and collective prestige across generations. 247 285
The Knight Tournament is a major noble event featuring individual and group contests. Participants compete against opponents of similar level, while defeated knights may lose their horses and equipment to the victors. 772
