In the shadowy corner, several faint red sparks glimmered. Thin blue smoke curled and spread, keeping the mosquitoes outside at bay.
Though dark clouds blanketed the sky and wind and rain pattered fiercely, they could still vaguely make out things through the doors and windows.
The three of them could not help but turn solemn. Their expressions wavered as they exchanged several glances.
"This matter is of great importance. We cannot be certain; it is merely speculation."
The man gave a strange little laugh, his smile carrying a feminine softness.
"Gentlemen, there is no need for concern. I was sent here precisely to probe the truth."
"If I were Prince Qi's man, there would be no need for such trouble. Based on the words I just overheard, I could have seized you and interrogated you for your crimes."
"Since Prince Qi has gone this far, he would naturally rather kill the wrong person than let the right one go. Why make such an unnecessary move?"
As he spoke, there came a snap. A fire striker flared to life, and he stepped forward half a pace, allowing the light to fall on his face. His complexion was pale, and he had no beard.
The others immediately understood.
"You are... from the Imperial City Office?"
The man nodded slightly and added, "I also came out of the palace."
"Gentlemen, time is pressing. The Imperial City Office has already sent three groups of men... but even with insiders assisting them, all of them vanished after entering."
The eunuch's tone was heavy.
"The palace is pressing urgently. We had no choice but to come ourselves. Someone must report what is happening here."
"Only once we have confirmed information can we act."
