The entire gang lived aboard a large ship that drifted with the current. Now seven or eight ships and dozens of fast boats had surrounded it.
Flaming arrows struck the ship one after another, and the wind fanned the flames. Those who had been hiding aboard, hoping to escape, had no choice but to show themselves. The moment they emerged, before they could leap into the water, a deadly rain of arrows met them.
Several experts fell into the water riddled like hedgehogs. They died without even managing to cut down a soldier or two to take with them.
"What was that?"
The ship hiding the leader of the Trust and Righteousness Gang rammed open a path and was about to escape. The fast boats pursuing it had only just caught up when a huge dark shape beneath the water overturned one of them, then capsized several more. The soldiers' assault faltered, and it looked as though the gang would escape with the help of this unknown force.
"Die!" A sword's gleam plunged into the water like a thunderbolt from a clear sky. With a splash, the surface churned, and before long, blood rose through it.
"Sir, please stay!" The patrol inspector overseeing the battle had no time to dwell on the possibility that the thing in the water was a demon. All his attention was on the man sheathing his sword and preparing to leave. He hurriedly called out, trying to stop him.
The man did not even glance back. With a few leaps, he was gone.
Seeing him leave so decisively, the patrol inspector's face darkened.
