Prince Ninghe had already been escorted by servants to the entrance of the main courtyard. The moment the two brothers came face-to-face there, Prince Shu raised his brows slightly.
This younger brother of his looked far thinner than the last time they had met—so thin his features had nearly changed!
Yet on closer inspection, though he was gaunt and his complexion pale and haggard, his spirits were better than before. He even seemed to be recovering somewhat. His eyes were no longer vacant and dull, but held a glimmer of life.
"Seventh Brother." Prince Shu stepped forward, took Prince Ninghe's hand, and looked him over from head to toe, seeming deeply distressed. "You've grown thin."
"Fifth Brother." Prince Ninghe did not bow to Prince Shu, merely returning the greeting.
This Fifth Brother before him was nearing thirty, yet had finely shaped brows and phoenix eyes, eyes bright as stars, with an elegant, handsome air and a face steeped in scholarly refinement. Prince Ninghe could not help sighing inwardly. Prince Shu had always been known for his graceful charm; his reputation was well deserved.
The two brothers stood holding hands and looking at one another. After a moment, perhaps Prince Shu himself could no longer bear the sentimentality. He coughed and said, "This is not a place for talking. Seventh Brother, come with me to the flower hall."
The two princes went one after the other to the flower hall and took their seats as host and guest. Once the servants had served tea and withdrawn, only the two brothers remained. Prince Ninghe had matters weighing on his mind and stole glances at Prince Shu. At just that moment, Prince Shu's gaze flicked toward him. With a single exchange of eyes, both understood.
