Ch. 861The Great Vengeance Could Finally Be Avenged
Chapter Summary
True Person Hui Dao visits the Yu Residence at midnight and delivers a series of astonishing predictions about the examination fortunes of Yu Lü, Zhang Sheng, and Fang Xi. He declares that Yu Lü will pass the Provincial Graduate examination and later achieve an even higher distinction, while Zhang Sheng will certainly pass the provincial level and then succeed in the capital. However, Zhang’s success depends on passing this time; failure would cost him much of his fortune and delay his prospects by several years. Fang Xi, whose learning has improved but whose success is not guaranteed under ordinary circumstances, is told that he will certainly pass the capital examination the following year.
Hui Dao then reveals that Fang Xi’s father, Fang Wenshao, still has one final opportunity. If he retakes the examination, he will narrowly pass, fulfill his lifelong ambition, and open a promising official career. If he gives up now, he will never have another chance. Fang Xi is especially moved by this news and eagerly confirms its truth.
Yu Lü’s parents soon enter after hearing the predictions. They are overjoyed to learn that their son may even achieve the highest honors in the capital. Because the older generation greatly reveres Mount Tong Temple and its history of influence, they readily believe Hui Dao’s words. Suspecting that the Daoist has another motive for making a midnight visit, Master Yu tactfully asks whether he needs assistance. Hui Dao denies having any request, accepts a gift of fifty taels, and prepares to leave.
Yu Lü escorts Hui Dao outside and questions him about how the Imperial Examinations— supposedly protected from interference even by nobles—could be affected by such certain predictions. Hui Dao explains cryptically that the movements of Heaven are difficult to perceive. What appears to have no cause merely reflects secrets that ordinary people cannot see; even those who understand them may be forbidden to reveal them. Yu Lü accepts that he cannot uncover the full truth but asks how he can repay Hui Dao for helping his friends.
Hui Dao finally states his real request: if his predictions come true, he hopes Yu Lü will introduce him to one or two important people. Yu Lü agrees. After leaving, Hui Dao privately reflects that he has followed his master’s instructions by burying the Heavenly Secret Arts, but the situation has now changed dramatically. He believes the time has come for his master’s long-awaited vengeance to be carried out.
