Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Surface Tier 5 The lowest named combat tier; Molis defeats one during her first battle, demonstrating that power varies greatly even among Monsters. 5
Shallow Tier 10, 41, 92 Shallow-Tier Monsters may be rated in layers; a third-layer Monster identifies itself as Shallow Tier, while a fourth-layer specimen overwhelms the rookie group RGB48. 41 92
Abyssification 11, 12 A rare Shallow-Tier Monster voluntarily undergoes Abyssification, becoming a featureless black humanoid with a greatly enhanced aura. This is a transformed state rather than a confirmed rank. 11
Intermediate Tier 101, 102 A Monster fighting Shan Que evolves abruptly from Shallow Tier, gaining metallic armor and a serrated greatsword formed from its own body. 101 102
Deep Tier 64, 104 Deep-Tier Monsters can infiltrate defended locations and threaten elite Magical Girls; one black-coated enemy is estimated to be at least eighth layer, beyond the Battle-Power Detector’s limits. 64 104
Abyssal Tier 134 Zabas, a former general held in a special detention facility, is identified as an Abyssal-Tier Monster; his voice alone overwhelms weaker listeners. 134

Origin and Nature

The Abyss is linked to human emotions and desires. When those impulses intensify or spiral out of control, humans can be corrupted into Monsters; because emotion is inseparable from humanity, Rabi states that the phenomenon cannot be eliminated permanently. 83 126

Natural Monsters may retain intelligence, memories, personalities, and the obsession that led to their corruption. The black-robed Monster defeated by Molis was driven by jealousy toward a more talented rival, while another Monster remained an enthusiastic Magical Girl fan even after transforming. 12 31

Not all Monsters arise naturally. Abyss Nest uses Abyssal Cores to forcibly connect people to the Abyss and manufacture violent Monsters. These artificial creations normally lack the defining obsessions of naturally awakened Monsters; later-generation Cores can remotely transform civilians and produce controllable, self-unaware specimens. 21 93

Magical Girls are generally protected from Abyssal corruption by their Pure Hearts, but self-doubt can weaken that protection. A corrupted Magical Girl is considered more dangerous than an ordinary Monster. 21

Appearance

Monsters have no fixed appearance. They can pass as ordinary humans, wear human disguises, or manifest as grotesque creatures ranging from humanoids to giant beasts. 32 82 101

  • A Monster may appear as a black-clad humanoid with obscured features. 3 10
  • Transformations can produce animalistic, insectoid, skeletal, wolf-headed, bull-headed, or long-armed forms. 1 8 18 59 140
  • Abyssification can cover a Monster in black, living-looking material or reshape it into a featureless black humanoid. 4 11
  • Higher-ranked or externally enhanced Monsters may grow armor, bodily weapons, tentacles, or abnormal regenerative tissue. 5 102

Abilities & Characteristics

Abyssal Corruption

A Monster’s power originates from its connection to the Abyss and is commonly accompanied by black mist or an Abyssal aura.

  • Natural corruption is usually preceded by amplified desires or a loss of control over instinct. 82
  • Some Abnormal Monsters transform with heart-attack-like convulsions and no visible behavioral warning, suggesting outside interference. 82 86
  • Monsters can conceal their aura and pose as ordinary people until they attack. 41 92

Physical Power and Regeneration

Combat ability differs sharply by rank, but even lower-tier Monsters can possess strength and durability beyond ordinary humans.

  • A wolf-headed Monster overpowers two Magical Girls while one is maintaining a civilian-protection barrier. 8
  • The first Monster fought by Molis regenerates a spear wound through its chest with black mist. 5
  • A Shallow-Tier Monster withstands the combined attacks of three hundred-thousand-follower Magical Girls without moving. 92
  • Intermediate-Tier Monsters can cause neighborhood-scale destruction and engage powerful Magical Girls in extended combat. 101 104

Abyssification and Evolution

Some Monsters can evolve or transform further in response to obsession, external power, or combat pressure.

  • Voluntary Abyssification is exceptionally rare among Shallow-Tier Monsters and greatly enhances the user’s aura and combat ability. 11
  • A Monster interrupted during an attempted evolution seeks greater power after being overwhelmed by Molis’s Red Form. 12
  • The Monster fought by Shan Que evolves from Shallow Tier to Intermediate Tier, then manifests armor and a greatsword from its own body. 101 102
  • The Abyss Fetal Horror rapidly develops by consuming Witches and absorbing Abyss-related energy, learning to dodge, block, heal, and catch Molis’s spear during battle. 69 70

Artificial Control

Abyss Nest can create and direct Monsters through Abyssal technology.

  • The Abyssal Core forcibly links a target to the Abyss and transforms them into a Monster. 21
  • Kels demonstrates the ability to command a long-armed Monster remotely. 18 21
  • A new generation of Abyssal Core can remotely influence vulnerable civilians and create controllable Monsters without self-awareness. 93
  • During the Nova Tournament assault, collared Monsters receive an “Abyss” signal and simultaneously release Abyssal aura. 65

Threat Hierarchy

Threat Relationship to Monsters
Abyss Nest An organized hostile faction that recruits, controls, and manufactures Monsters for coordinated operations. 21 53
Witches Often hostile to Magical Girls and Monsters alike; the Abyss Fetal Horror consumes Witches and grows stronger from them. 69 70
Abyssal Demons Beings distinct from ordinary Monsters and more dangerous than Abyssal-Tier Monsters; the Ten Demons of the Abyssal Darkside are sealed beneath Cloud City’s Black Wall. 123 126
Growth-Type Monster A rare classification identified by Rabi after the Abyss Fetal Horror displays extreme adaptation and accelerated development. 70

Story Role / Major Arcs

  • Molis’s first battle is against a Surface-Tier Monster obsessed with collecting underwear. Its Abyss-enhanced revival forces her to summon the Moonlight Spear and develop Moonstream Radiance. 3 4 5
  • A black-robed Shallow-Tier Monster nearly kills Xia Ya, voluntarily Abyssifies, and is ultimately destroyed by Xia Ya and Molis working together. 10 11 12
  • Abyss Nest’s involvement becomes explicit when Kels controls a Monster using an Abyssal aura; Rabi then explains the Abyssal Core’s role in forced transformation. 18 21
  • Molis and Xia Ya confront a group of transformed thugs in the factory district. The scar-faced leader’s final memories reveal that Abyss Nest recruited and transformed him, while one surviving Monster escapes. 31 33
  • A defeated Monster’s lingering consciousness reveals Abyss Nest’s planned attack on the Nova Tournament, exposing Molis’s unique ability to communicate with dead Monsters. 42
  • During the Nova Tournament invasion, a Monster horde assaults the stadium while an Abyssal seed awakens into the Abyss Fetal Horror, a Growth-Type Monster that consumes Witches before Molis destroys it in Hero Form. 64 68 70 72
  • Later Abnormal Monster incidents reveal that artificial Cores can transform civilians remotely. Bai Yi defeats one such Shallow-Tier specimen barehanded at a mall. 82 92 93
  • Repeated Intermediate-Tier attacks are linked to a black-coated Deep-Tier Monster who treats enhanced Monsters as disposable tests for Molis. 101 102 104
