April 22, 2297.
A mining area outside Flying Cloud City.
Several children in their early teens were mischievously hopping back and forth across the wall's Jump Bricks, playing a game of chase.
Their innocent laughter was swallowed by the clamor of mining machinery.
Several massive mechs held enormous steel drills, lined up end to end and braced against one another.
On one side lay the mining zone to be excavated; on the other was the solid wall.
Since the wall could not be damaged, it could provide an almost unlimited amount of powerful reactive force.
So, for mining zones close to the wall, this was the most efficient and labor-saving method.
"Move, move, move! Align Pillar Three! You little brats over there, get farther away! The debris will hit you in a minute!"
A foreman poked his head out of the collision rig's cockpit and shouted.
"Good, it's aligned. Get ready!"
Just as everything was ready and they were about to activate the collision rig—
BOOM!!
A sudden peal of thunder exploded across the horizon!
It was deafening, drowning out every other sound in the world.
Everyone's hearts jolted, and they instinctively looked up.
But with the Interference Clouds overhead, they could not see what was happening in the sky.
They could only vaguely make out a silver streak spreading outward from where the thunder had sounded, cutting across the entire sky.
"What was that sound?"
"No idea. Is it going to rain?"
"I've never heard thunder that loud."
"Forget it, get back to work!"
"Ready!"
The brief interruption did not affect the progress of the work. The foreman shouted, pulling everyone back to reality.
The collision rig roared to life!
THUD!!
The collision rig slammed into the wall. It should have generated an even greater reactive force, driving the
