The Gates are eight successive barriers in the chakra circulatory system. The table records documented advances by users, rather than changes to the technique itself 41.

Mechanics and Limits

• Chakra barriers — Opening a Gate removes a natural restriction on chakra flow, sharply increasing physical strength and speed. The Gates, in order, are Opening, Healing, Life, Pain, Limit, View, Wonder, and Death 41.
• Physical cost — The technique damages the user’s body; Lee is barely able to move after using it against Gaara. Kanami’s fifth gate disrupts his Cell Activation, while the effects of his clone’s Gates can pass back to his real body when the clone is released 42 70 209.
• Gate of Death — Opening all eight Gates can grant power beyond Kage level, but costs the user’s life. Kanami considers attempting the final Gate and rejects an untested theory that body activation might let him survive it 41 161 257.
• Chakra absorption — The blue aura produced by Guy’s Seventh Gate is steam from exertion, not absorbable chakra. Kisame’s Samehada consequently cannot drain it 195.

Notable Uses

• Lee versus Gaara — Lee pushes through severe injuries to break Gaara’s Sand Armor and prepare the Reverse Lotus. Guy stops the match when Gaara’s counterattack threatens to cripple him 41 42.
• Kanami versus Ay — Kanami stops at the Fifth Gate to maximize his strength and speed without destabilizing Cell Activation; he judges the Sixth and Seventh Gates unsafe for that combination at the time 102.
• Kanami versus Urashiki — Kanami rapidly opens seven Gates while also using Six Paths Mode and Kaguya’s physical power, then sends Urashiki into a deep crater with one punch 536.
