Biodata
| Feature | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | Leonard Mitchell (伦纳德) 76 |
| Alias(es) | The Star; Mr. Star. Pallez teasingly calls him “Lady Star” 114 115. |
| Species/Race | Human; host to the parasitic Angel Pallez Zoroast 78 114 116. |
| Gender | Male 76 |
| Affiliation | Tingen Nighthawks; Church of Evernight; Tarot Club 76 114 |
| Occupation/Role | Nighthawk investigator and field operative; uses a police identity during official business 76 85. |
| Beyonder Rank | Sequence 8 Midnight Poet 76 188 |
| Status | Alive; survives the attack on Black Thorn Security Company and assists the critically injured Klein 187 189. |
Appearance
- Hair and eyes: Black, messy hair and green eyes 76.
- Clothing: An untidy white shirt, black trousers, and laceless leather boots; carries a hat 76.
- Bearing: Has the air of a poet and speaks with a somewhat languid voice 76 77.
- Relative height: Roughly half a head shorter than Morien 78.
Personality
Leonard is casual and rarely maintains a solemn demeanor for long. During his first Tarot Club meeting, he relaxes after seeing Morien’s easy posture, finding constant seriousness uncomfortable. His relationship with Pallez remains sarcastic and familiar even after he learns that the “Old Man” is an Angel 114 115.
He considers himself the protagonist of his era, partly because an ancient being resides inside him. After witnessing Morien’s victory over the Aurora Order, he interprets his publicity assignment as an important historical mission. This confidence coexists with insecurity: at his first gathering, he wonders whether Pallez is the only reason he qualifies for membership 78 85 115.
Leonard balances curiosity with conscience and caution. He stops questioning Derrick when he realizes he is extracting valuable information without compensation, and he accepts that confronting Morien without preparation would risk meaningless deaths. His loyalty to Klein is more immediate: he helps with unfamiliar techniques without hesitation and urgently brings Klein’s siblings to him when his condition becomes critical 78 115 188 189.
Abilities & Skills
Midnight Poet
Leonard is a Sequence 8 Midnight Poet whose spoken verse can pacify supernatural targets 76 188.
- Uses Requiem to render Great Serpent powerless during Klein’s Shikigami experiments 188.
- Combines Requiem with Dunn’s Dream Infiltration to incapacitate Nue 188.
- Can assist these particular Subjugation attempts because he possesses no Cursed Energy, which is what the ritual checks for when detecting outside interference 188.
Investigation and Field Judgment
- Presents case files to Klein and requests divination to determine whether supernatural factors are involved 76.
- Recognizes the need to retreat, gather intelligence, and obtain suitable Sealed Artifacts rather than attack a superior opponent recklessly 78.
- Stalls Christina until Klein can take over, then leaves to obtain assistance 185.
Connection to Pallez
Pallez provides internal warnings and advice, but his Angel-level abilities are not Leonard’s own powers 78 116.
- Pallez can briefly seize control of Leonard’s body 78.
- Leonard’s body becomes temporarily empty when his spirit is summoned Above the Gray Fog, allowing Pallez to control it during the gathering 115.
- Morien describes their current parasitism as shallow—essentially Pallez “renting a room”—rather than complete possession 116.
Equipment
- Firearm — Carries a gun and aims it at Morien during the warehouse confrontation 77 78.
- Police identity — Plans to use his official standing to demand front-page newspaper coverage for the Tarot Club 85.
Story Role / Major Arcs
East Borough Contamination Investigation
- Assigns Klein an investigation into thieves, vagabonds, and gang members who have become unnaturally obsessed with philosophy. Their mental collapse and bodily mutations suggest Beyonder involvement 76.
- Enters Morien’s warehouse with Klein and confronts him at gunpoint after discovering the results of his contamination experiments 77.
- Morien’s right-eye monocle provokes Pallez, whose reaction briefly disrupts Leonard’s control of his body. Leonard subsequently follows Klein’s and Pallez’s advice against an immediate fight 78.
- Receives Morien’s declaration that The Tower of the Tarot Club claims responsibility for the incident and worships Mr. Fool 78.
Witness to the Aurora Order Battle
- Remains with Klein as Morien fights Mr. Z. The two hide on stacked wooden crates, deciding that fleeing could attract the enemy’s attention 79 82.
- Becomes trapped inside Botis’s isolated space and witnesses Morien defeat both Aurora Order members through Dream of a Mayfly 83 84.
- Morien demands at least a week of front-page publicity and forces Leonard to recite the Fool’s honorific name in Ancient Hermes 85.
- Leonard begins to suspect that the Fool is an ally of the Evernight Goddess. A subsequent newspaper report portrays the Tarot Club as responsible for killing an Aurora Order Oracle and Saint 85 86.
Joining the Tarot Club
- Discusses his persistent feeling of being watched with Pallez before being summoned Above the Gray Fog 114.
- Requests membership partly to obtain protection against the potential danger of the Angel inside him. The Fool accepts and instructs him to inform Pallez, explaining that deterrence can be more useful than battle 114.
- Draws The Star as his codename, unaware that every card offered to him is identical 114.
- At his first meeting, learns the Club’s procedures, meets Derrick, and accepts Morien’s long-term materials commission in exchange for access to the Blasphemy Slate 115.
- Returns to discover that Pallez controlled his body and claims to have stolen three years of his lifespan 115.
- Later reports that he has found neither a Tomb Wraith nor a Ruin Wanderer. He also searches Morien’s honorific name for evidence of an Evernight connection, without success 184.
Black Thorn Security Company Attack
- Helps contain Christina before her corruption erupts and devastates the building. The resulting supernatural attack threatens to separate Leonard’s and Dunn’s spirits from their bodies 185 186.
- Escapes Ince Zangwill’s assault through Klein’s shadows and returns to the hall aboard Round Deer 187.
- Supports Dunn and helps Klein incapacitate Great Serpent and Nue, despite not fully understanding Klein’s plan 187 188.
- When Klein is left gravely injured, urgently fetches Melissa and Benson so they can see their brother 189.
Relationships
- Klein Moretti — Fellow Nighthawk and trusted colleague. Klein shields him during the confrontation with Morien; Leonard later assists his Shikigami experiments and brings his siblings to his bedside 78 188 189.
- Pallez Zoroast — Ancient Angel residing inside Leonard. Their bond combines advice, teasing, trust, and Leonard’s continuing vigilance against possession 114 115 116.
- Mr. Fool — Tarot Club leader whom Leonard approaches with reverence. Leonard learns that Klein has been summoned by the Fool, but does not recognize that Klein is the Fool himself 114.
- Morien / Mr. Tower — Initially regarded as a dangerous cultist; later a fellow Tarot Club member. Morien intimidates him into publicity work and offers access to the Blasphemy Slate through a materials commission 85 115.
- Dunn Smith — Nighthawk captain. Leonard seeks his assistance during Christina’s visit and supports him after Ince’s attack 185 187 188.
- Derrick / Mr. Sun — Fellow Tarot Club member whose origin in the Forsaken Land of the Gods fascinates Leonard. Derrick’s open answers prompt Leonard to restrain his questioning out of guilt 115.
- Evernight Goddess — Leonard’s deity. He repeatedly suspects that she is connected to the Fool and the Tarot Club, though his examination of Morien’s honorific name provides no confirmation 85 114 184.
