Background

Tony Stark was the public face and genius engineer of Stark Group, though Pepper Potts and Obadiah Stane handled much of the company’s management. His disappearance causes Stark Group’s stock to fall sharply, demonstrating how closely the company’s value is tied to him 16 17.

During a military convoy attack in Afghanistan, the Ten Rings discover Stark among their victims and abduct him. They force him to build a Jericho Missile, but he instead develops the Mark I armor with Yinsen’s help 16 23. His captivity becomes the second major hardship of his life after his parents’ deaths and begins dismantling his sense of invulnerability 24.

Pepper hires Mike to rescue him. Stark initially meets his rescuer with suspicion and argument, but accepts Mike’s help after being shown that the terrorists’ camp has already been neutralized 24.
