Aidan descended the steps one at a time, moving with utmost care.
He did not know why, but ever since that inexplicable hallucination, he had felt uneasy.
"Damn it. What the hell is going on?"
The farther down he went, the stronger his unease grew. At last, he looked into the dim depths of the cavern below. It resembled the gaping maw of a bloodthirsty beast, and he suddenly felt as though it might swallow him whole.
The hairs on his back stood on end, and cold sweat streamed down his forehead.
Aidan hesitated. By now, he understood that something extraordinary must have happened deep underground. He had felt uneasy and in danger on his previous visits, but never to the point that he could hardly eat or sleep.
The sense of danger was almost tangible.
It was terrifying.
"What do I do? Just give up?"
"But there's the matter of Deity No. 181, and those people in the Monastery..."
He was in turmoil. On one hand lay an unknown danger. On the other, if he did not go in, he could not resolve the problems before him. Left unanswered, they might grow into a deadly threat.
He could already sense a dangerous current hidden within the Monastery, seemingly coming from those mysterious people. If he failed to learn what was happening and blundered against that current, it would smash him to pieces before he knew it.
