Konoha Gate.
Iruka and the other two stood there with packs on their backs, already waiting for Tobitake Tonbo.
"The official mission is finally starting. Watch me finish this in a single day. Heh heh." Iruka was brimming with confidence.
Wasn't it just finding someone? After doing missions for so long, his methods for tracking down cats and dogs had become second nature. Iruka was incredibly confident.
Mibu Shinobu and Teksen Shiso were the same. Having previously been fired up about D-rank Missions by the Will of Fire, they were full of enthusiasm, though they still looked forward to higher-ranked missions.
This intelligence-gathering mission to find someone had been rated B-Rank because it involved a ninja.
That was why they were so motivated.
"Why hasn't the captain come yet? We've been ready for ages."
"Sorry, sorry. Saying goodbye to my fiancée took a little time." Tobitake Tonbo appeared behind them at some unknown point.
Bang!
The sudden sound made all three of their hearts skip a beat.
Only after hearing their captain's voice did they let out a breath.
Iruka patted his chest. "Captain, you nearly scared us to death."
"And besides, how did your girlfriend suddenly become your fiancée?"
"We've already set the wedding date. Get ready to drink at your captain's wedding, hehe!" Tobitake Tonbo bragged.
How many people in Konoha still did not have wives? Aside from the forced pairings among the Twelve Rookie Ninja, Kakashi's generation only had Kurenai and Asuma, along with Gekko Hayate and Uzuki Yugao.
Now that he had gotten ahead of them, he could mock them later.
"Also, ninja must remain aware of their surroundings at all times. Know when it is time to rest and when it is time to enter a combat-ready state.
"You cannot stay constantly tense, or your mind will suffer damage.
"But you cannot let down your guard either, because enemies may appear at any moment."
Tobitake Tonbo finally lectured them.
This was practical knowledge, the kind that kept ninja alive. He had summed it up after seeing so many ninja memories, combined with his own experiences.
"Yes, Captain."
What Tobitake Tonbo said made sense, but they were unconvinced. How could anyone stay alert all the time? Not even the greatest ninja could manage that!
"Alright, let's go. Soul Street, Land of Fire."
Whoosh, whoosh!
Four figures advanced through the forest in a wedge formation.
"According to the Hokage's intelligence, Asuma appeared in Soul Street two days ago, though only briefly. Once we arrive at our destination, we will immediately begin gathering intelligence. Understood?"
Tobitake Tonbo gave the team their orders.
Within Konoha, he was their teacher. Outside Konoha, he was the squad captain. He could not afford to slack off.
"Yes, Captain."
Tobitake Tonbo's stern expression affected the three of them, and their cheerful looks turned serious.
Whoosh, whoosh!
Tobitake Tonbo periodically extended his perception toward them. Seeing that they had not wasted his instruction in the technique of attaching chakra to their feet, the corners of his mouth lifted slightly.
Improved focus really was immensely useful for chakra control. Over the past month, the three of them had not only learned to concentrate at will, but also to assess their surroundings and extract chakra for a counterattack in a brief instant.
They had also mastered techniques like tree climbing and water walking within a few days. By now, they could even use them while traveling.
Half a day later.
The four arrived at Soul Street. It was actually a town, and a fairly bustling one at that.
After choosing an inn as their meeting point, the four split up and scattered to gather intelligence.
Tobitake Tonbo walked alone down the street, observing everything around him. His powerful brain and profound knowledge allowed him to store everything he sensed in his mind.
This was where the advantage of a sensory ninja came into play. Within a radius of several kilometers, very little could escape his notice.
His experience reading minds from the battlefield until now also made processing such information as easy as taking eggs from a bird's nest.
"Asuma... judging by what the Third said, he seemed to have left the village to find the jade in his heart. Was that how it went?
"And according to the original story, before returning to Konoha, Asuma served as one of the Twelve Guardian Ninja to the daimyo, all the way until he found that jade in his heart.
"Could I wait for him in the Land of Fire Capital?"
All sorts of information about Soul Street flashed through his mind: the beauties at the hot spring house, the underground Bounty Station, the busty women at the casino...
Wait...
After sensing more carefully, an enormous chakra signature entered his mind. There was also a smaller chakra signature beside it.
"It can't be that much of a coincidence, can it?"
Tobitake Tonbo sighed inwardly at how small the world was. Though he did not want to believe it, that truly was Tsunade, the dream goddess of countless Naruto fans.
One of Konoha's three great vices—the gambler.
But what did that have to do with him?
He already had his goddess. After sensing her for a moment, he shifted his attention away.
He merely committed the intelligence to memory.
Any information from the outside world might prove useful.
He turned his perception toward the three little ones.
They were working quite hard, seemingly asking around everywhere for information on Asuma.
Iruka went to ask at the inns, while Mibu Shinobu went to the hot spring house.
Teksen Shiso was more shrewd. He went to the grilled sausage stalls and noodle shops, both places that revealed Asuma's preferences.
As for Tobitake Tonbo, he already knew that Asuma would definitely head for the Land of Fire Capital. With nothing else to do, he returned to the inn, took out a notebook, and leisurely drew and wrote in it.
It contained his ultimate ideas for a Genjutsu series.
First, History Rewrite: insert a segment of history into the enemy's memories, insert one's own existence into the enemy's past, and thereby alter the enemy's perception of oneself.
Second, Kyoka Suigetsu: use Genjutsu to manipulate the enemy's appearance, touch, shape, and five senses, achieving deception so real it became indistinguishable from reality.
Third, Secret Technique: Eye-Painting Hand: develop it on the foundation of secret techniques, using Yin Release's ability to create form from nothing to deceive Heaven and Earth, deceive oneself, and thus forge a path toward using Genjutsu to control the weather itself.
While teaching Iruka and the other three, Barrier Technique was not the only thing he had studied. Genjutsu had always been the field he researched most deeply.
These three ultimate Genjutsu series were the three especially difficult-to-break ultimate Genjutsu he had devised through two years of exploration.
However, all of them were extremely difficult. Each might be a ten-year project, so he had to make choices.
Even so, he would not waste a single moment of research time.
Time passed quickly during research, and night soon fell. Sensing the three little ones returning, he put away his notebook.
Knock, knock!
"Come in."
"Ah, I'm exhausted. I never thought finding someone would be so much harder than finding cats and dogs!"
The three walked in, panting heavily.
Tobitake Tonbo asked, "How did it go?"
Iruka said dejectedly, "Not a single clue. It's like he never appeared in Soul Street at all."
Mibu Shinobu said, "I didn't gather any information about Asuma either."
Teksen Shiso, however, smiled. "Asuma really did appear two days ago. He even ate a huge pile of grilled sausages at a sausage stall.
"But after that, there was no more news of him."
The other two stared at him in surprise. They had not expected him to actually find information!
Tobitake Tonbo praised him. "Shiso did well. You two should learn properly from Shiso when it comes to intelligence analysis."
He truly meant the praise. Do not underestimate the analysis of such tiny details—they could be the dividing line between a Chunin and a Jōnin.
Iruka looked unconvinced. "Damn it, you got your moment in the spotlight this time. Next time, I definitely won't lose."
"What about you, Captain?
"What intelligence did you gather?"
After sharing their intelligence, all three looked at Tobitake Tonbo.
