Background and History

Konohamaru is the son of Shinnosuke Sarutobi and his wife, and the grandson of the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. After his parents die on a mission, nannies care for him while Hiruzen works. He frequently visits his grandfather at the Hokage’s office because he misses him 102 129.

At the Ninja Academy, Konohamaru forms a team with Moegi and Udon and repeatedly challenges the stronger Tenyu Squad. Being called weak—and having his poor academic effort pointed out—pushes him to study seriously under Ebisu 164 173. He also begins following Naruto, hoping to learn a technique that had knocked down Hiruzen. Naruto eventually accepts him as a little brother 182.

Hiruzen’s death leaves Konohamaru withdrawn and angry that someone else has taken even the acting Hokage position. Tenyu and his teammates try to draw him back into training. Tobitake Tonbo then reminds Konohamaru that protecting Konoha is how he can preserve his grandfather’s legacy; Konohamaru resolves to grow stronger and accepts Tonbo’s instruction 238 240.

Personality

Konohamaru is proud of being the Third Hokage’s grandson and determined to become Hokage himself. His competitiveness initially makes him dismissive of schoolwork, but defeat by Tenyu’s group gives him a concrete reason to improve 164 173. He is fiercely attached to both Hiruzen and Naruto, whom he calls “Brother Naruto” 221 240.

He is also wary of people’s motives. When Tenyu’s group suddenly apologizes after years of rivalry, Konohamaru suspects they want to benefit from his connection to the Hokage, even though he is tempted by their offer of joint training 221.

Abilities and Skills

Rasengan

Naruto teaches Konohamaru the seal-less Rasengan. Konohamaru quickly identifies the difficulty of landing it on a moving opponent and learns the technique fast enough to surprise Naruto 277.

• Develops the Big Ball Rasengan independently before Naruto teaches him that variation 277.
• Uses the Big Ball Rasengan to destroy a Naraka Path puppet during the invasion of Konoha 318.

Shuriken Techniques

• Uses shuriken surrounded by wind blades against the Naraka Path, creating a barrage that blasts craters into the ground 317.
