Background / History

Qiao Duanhong led the Hongfu Escort Agency’s convoy when Li Yunxin asked to travel with it. Initially wary that the armed youth could be a bandit scout, he accepted Li after receiving a tael of silver and directed him to a rear cart 8.

During the Six Ghosts of Hezhong’s seizure of the convoy, Qiao recognized that the attackers’ skill made open resistance suicidal. He ordered the agency’s goods burned, endured personal humiliation to protect his people, and quietly prepared them to fight if no other option remained 11 12. Once the Ghosts received orders to kill the captives, he ordered Qiao Jiaxin and Qiao Sifu to flee while he and several escorts held the enemy back 14.

Li Yunxin and Liu Laodao’s formation overturned Qiao’s assumptions about them. He apologized for previously underestimating them and deferred to Li’s tactical direction, admitting that his escorts could at best wound several of the Six Ghosts in a surprise attack 15.

Qiao survived the forest massacre but was found with shattered legs and numerous sword wounds. Li Yunxin used acupressure to slow his bleeding and bandaged him before the survivors brought him back to Weicheng 26. He remained unconscious and feverish while most of his household abandoned him 37.

After Qiao’s death, Qiao Wangshi and Qiao Liushi’s adultery, murder, and attempted seizure of the family estate were uncovered as the motive behind the household’s collapse 41.

Personality

Qiao was cautious, practical, and deeply responsible for the people under his command. He prioritized survival over pride, choosing compliance when resistance would have meant the immediate death of his escorts and family 11 12.

When death became unavoidable, he showed resolve rather than panic. He prepared to sacrifice himself to give the younger members of the group a chance to escape and ensured that any survivors would receive instructions to flee and disperse 14.

Escort Convoy and Capture

Qiao accepted Li Yunxin as a paying traveler and led the Hongfu Escort Agency toward Weicheng. The caravan was then captured by the Six Ghosts of Hezhong, who destroyed its goods and marched the group into the forest for Huainanzi’s killing tribulation 8 11 14.

Forest Massacre

After realizing the captives were meant to die, Qiao prepared the agency for a last stand and arranged for Jiaxin and Sifu to escape. He later acknowledged Li Yunxin’s authority after the Night Journey in Splendid Robes formation temporarily subdued the Six Ghosts 14 15.

Survival and Household Collapse

Qiao was the only surviving member of the escort party besides Liu Laodao and the possessed Jiaxin’s body, but his injuries left him crippled and unconscious 26. His household then fractured around his illness and eventual death, as relatives pursued his property and targeted those associated with him 37 39 41.

Trivia

• Qiao’s reputation as the Water-Cleaving Blade reflected his standing as a capable escort master, but he himself considered the Six Ghosts far beyond what his group could confront directly 11 15.
• His attempt to use Guiding Incense eventually brought Yu Meng, Dragon Head of the Escort-Bureau Guild, to the aftermath of the attack 12 28.
