Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mark I | 1 | Tony Stark and Yinsen destroy its blueprints and research computer before escaping the Ten Rings’ cave. Parts left behind later provide a reference for Obadiah’s Iron Monger project 9. |
| Mark II | 98 | Tony gives the suit to Rhodes. AIM subsequently modifies it into Iron Patriot. |
| Mark 3 | 10 12 | Tony wears it against Iron Monger; its palm-mounted Arc Pulse Cannons cannot penetrate the heavier armor. He later agrees to make a Mark 3 for Roy. |
| Mark 5 — in development | 21 | A suitcase-sized portable design. Its reduced weapons and defenses, and the need for Tony to stand still while putting it on, prompt Roy to suggest a new deployment method. |
| Mark VI | 29 33 | Adopts laser-guided tracking and rapid deployment, assembling around its user in under ten seconds. Its stronger weapons receive a live test against Abomination, whose durability limits the effect of its pulse cannons. |
| Mark 7 | 49 | Adds stronger weapons, improved defense and maneuverability, medical diagnostics, and modular equipment. It autonomously flies to Tony and assembles around him during Ivan Vanko’s Monaco attack. |
| Marks 8–11 | 79 | Four empty suits remotely controlled by JARVIS accompany Tony’s piloted Mark 7 to S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Helicarrier. |
| Mark 15, “Prodigal Son” | 101 | Adds component-level automatic assembly, brainwave-based movement control, environmental protection, expanded weapons options, and a directional energy reactor. Roy suggests its name. |
Background / History
Tony develops the armor after his captivity in Afghanistan. He and Yinsen destroy their Mark I research before leaving the cave, but parts left there later help Obadiah Stane pursue the Iron Monger Armor Project 1 9. Wearing Mark 3, Tony confronts Obadiah and is overpowered; Roy intervenes and defeats Iron Monger 10 12. Tony subsequently reveals at a press conference that he is Iron Man 12.
Roy’s suggestion that a suit fly to Tony and assemble around him leads to Mark VI’s laser-guided deployment system 21 29. After a later attack by Vanko and Brock Rumlow, Roy proposes building multiple JARVIS-controlled suits—an “Iron Legion” 75. Four remotely controlled suits accompany Tony to the Helicarrier and later help his Mark 7 contain Hulk, though their lasers have little effect 79 83.
Appearance
The suits are wearable metal armor. Mark 3 uses a gold-titanium alloy, while Mark 15 combines the alloy with special ceramics 12 101.
- Red-and-gold finish — shown on the five suits that approach the Helicarrier and retained on this timeline’s Mark 15 79 101.
- Suit-specific forms — Mark 5 is designed to compress to suitcase size; Mark VI has a flight-oriented form before unfolding around its user 21 29.
Abilities & Skills
Deployment and remote operation
- Rapid assembly — Mark VI tracks its user and deploys in under ten seconds; Mark 7 flies autonomously to Tony before assembling around him 29 49.
- Remote control — JARVIS operates Marks 8–11 without occupants. Mark 15 can also be remotely controlled and assembled from independently powered components 79 101.
- Movement capture — Mark 15 uses microchips on Tony’s body to recognize brainwave commands and imitate his movements 101.
Flight and protection
- Powered flight — Tony flies in Mark 3; Mark 7 adds thrusters to improve maneuverability 10 49.
- Armor protection — Mark 5’s lightweight design limits it to small-arms fire and minor explosions. Mark 15 adds ceramics and protection for nuclear-contaminated and other extreme environments 21 101.
- Limits — Iron Monger physically overwhelms Mark 3, while Killian tears apart Mark 15’s outer armor in close combat 10 115.
Weapons and support systems
- Energy weapons — palm-mounted Arc Pulse Cannons and a chest-mounted unibeam recur across the suits. Mark 7 adds laser-cutting beams; Mark 15 adds electromagnetic weapons and an energy shield generator 10 29 49 101.
- Mission equipment — Mark 7’s modular system permits rapid changes to its missiles and other equipment. Mark 15 supports additional weapons including rockets, freeze cannons, and tranquilizer rounds 49 101.
- Diagnostics — Mark 7 includes a medical diagnostic system 49.
- Limits — Mark 3’s pulse cannons cannot penetrate Iron Monger, and Mark VI’s blasts barely affect Abomination 10 33.
Relationships
- Tony Stark — creator and principal wearer; he develops successive Marks while retaining control of the armor technology 12 46 101.
- JARVIS — provides analysis, deployment assistance, and remote operation of unoccupied suits 29 79 101.
- Roy — suggests laser-guided deployment and an automated Iron Legion; Tony also agrees to make him a Mark 3 12 21 75.
- James Rhodes — receives Mark II from Tony; AIM modifies it into Iron Patriot 98.
