Background / History

Tony was held captive in Afghanistan with shrapnel threatening his heart and a glowing life-support device embedded in his chest. Roy rescued him under a commission arranged by Pepper Potts, and Tony paid Roy $30.5 million upon returning to Los Angeles 1 3.

After witnessing weapons intended to protect soldiers being used against them, Tony shut down Stark Industries’ weapons division and sought a new direction for the company 3. The decision destabilized Stark Industries and contributed to Tony being removed from its board by the other directors 9.

Tony discovered that Obadiah Stane had sold Stark weapons to terrorists, arranged Tony’s assassination, and developed the Iron Monger Armor. After Obadiah stole Tony’s miniature Arc Reactor, Pepper restored Tony’s life support; Tony then confronted Stane in the Mark III, with Roy intervening when Iron Monger overwhelmed him 9 10.
