History

Konoha clan

The Uchiha were initially a prominent but politically isolated Konoha clan whose principal institution was the Konoha Police Force. Clan Head Fugaku considered the Sharingan the clan’s irreplaceable foundation, while the clan’s manpower and resources remained tied to village-controlled police work rather than independent ventures 17 95.

Uchiha Chuan’s emergence changed the clan’s direction. Fugaku and Elder Tenchi praised his claim that hard work could surpass genius, presenting him as an ideal future leader and granting him broad access to clan training and techniques 2 3. Chuan later received equal standing from Fugaku and unrestricted access to Uchiha secret and forbidden techniques 17.

After Chuan withdrew from the Ninja Academy, the clan collectively withdrew its students in solidarity. Most students returned two days later, but Chuan remained absent because he had already surpassed the Academy’s curriculum 23 32.

Public rehabilitation and internal strain

Chuan’s Stilt Football initiative transformed the Uchiha’s public image. Villagers who watched the Police Force compete began viewing its members as disciplined, dependable protectors; the Uchiha responded to this goodwill by becoming more approachable and helpful 38.

The same competition exposed a destructive aspect of the clan’s culture. Six young players awakened the Sharingan in a single match, but several newly awakened children became arrogant, refused teamwork, and treated non-awakened teammates as inferior 44 45. Fugaku and the elders came to recognize that Sharingan awakening could intensify pride, instability, and contempt, a problem later termed a “Bloodline Disease” by Konoha’s advisors 48 57.

Factional split

A dispute over the Police Force divided the clan between Chuan’s supporters and Uchiha Tieyue’s Hardliners. When Tieyue publicly accused Fugaku of betraying the clan, Chuan acknowledged that he had advised transferring Moderate-controlled police divisions and forced the clan to choose a side 94.

Fugaku and the elders supported Chuan, and most Moderates—as well as some Hardliners—followed him. Tieyue departed with his remaining followers, formalizing the split 94 98. Chuan later presented evidence that Tieyue had met with Koharu, Homura, and ANBU personnel, convincing the clan that Tieyue had collaborated with Konoha’s leadership 95.

The Hardliner Revisionists were eventually allowed to return after surrendering four Police Force divisions and accepting the clan’s arrangements. Chuan argued that internal conflict should end because all Uchiha shared the same roots 118.

Withdrawal from Konoha

As war approached, Chuan replaced nearly the entire clan with Flesh Clones and secretly led the real Uchiha out of Konoha. The clones remained behind to maintain the appearance of a living clan and, later, to stage its destruction 188 193.

Konoha publicly announced the clan’s annihilation after the Four Kage attacked the Uchiha district. The apparent corpses, destroyed Sharingan, and Chuan’s body were part of the deception; Madara eventually confirmed that Chuan and the clan had survived through substitutes 195 209.

Land of U and U Hidden Village

In the Land of Rain, Chuan used the Chakra Infection Technique to grant civilians chakra and access to Sharingan power under the Uchiha name. Akatsuki expanded into an organization of more than one hundred thousand members as ordinary citizens became combatants and administrators rebuilt local society 191 197.

Chuan formally renamed the Land of Rain the Land of U and founded U Hidden Village. Under this system, “Uchiha” became a shared identity rather than an inherited privilege: residents could adopt the surname, cultivate the Infection Technique, and gain access to the Sharingan, while the Mangekyō Sharingan remained unavailable through this shortcut 238.

Branch families of the Hyūga, Inuzuka, and Aburame clans, along with the Kurama Clan, later defected to U Hidden Village. Their inherited techniques became significantly stronger when combined with the Sharingan, forcing the original Uchiha to abandon bloodline-based pride and compete through research and ninjutsu development 243.

Clan Culture

The Uchiha traditionally regarded the Sharingan as synonymous with power and status. This produced a hierarchy in which awakened members often looked down on non-awakened clan members as well as outsiders 48 54.

Chuan repeatedly challenged this mindset. He argued that eye power without discipline, physical ability, and emotional control was useless, particularly after Sharingan users lost a Stilt Football match through arrogance and poor teamwork 45. His later reforms in the Land of U explicitly abolished the distinction between “legitimate” Uchiha and those who became Uchiha through the Infection Technique 238.

The clan is portrayed as highly responsive to goodwill. Once villagers treated Police Force members sincerely, the Uchiha reciprocated with greater warmth and public service, helping dissolve longstanding distrust 38.

Sharingan

The Sharingan is the Uchiha’s central kekkei genkai and the basis of their confidence in sharing ordinary ninjutsu without losing their clan’s strategic advantage 17.
