Cai Lin was designated to become the next Queen of the Snake People Clan from birth. The role denied her a personal name and bound her to the clan's survival, glory, and decline. 144

At fifteen, she experienced a war between the Snake People and the Jia Ma Imperial Capital. After the reigning Queen Medusa and her opponent died, Cai Lin and her sister became candidates for succession; the elders decreed that only one could survive. Cai Lin ultimately became queen while her sister fled the clan. 157
