Mayor Blake spat out a mouthful of bloody saliva. His once-neat clothes were disheveled and stained with blood, and a swelling on his handsome face made him look especially battered.
After getting up, Mayor Blake took off his blood-soaked jacket, tossed it aside, and headed toward town.
A young girl lay on the ground behind him.
Her body twitched uncontrollably. Blood kept spilling from her mouth, while more gushed from the cut in her throat.

The girl struggled to crawl a little farther, then went still.
The girl was Jie. She had suffered the same wound as her father and Older Sister, inflicted by the very man her father had saved.
