Ch. 21Baratie
Chapter Summary: “Baratie”
Plot Points and Events
- Werther travels through the East Blue aboard his sail-less ship, searching for the floating restaurant Baratie.
- His inaccurate sea chart—purchased from a dishonest merchant in Loguetown—causes him to become badly lost. Despite having ample food, water, and a seawater filtration system, he grows increasingly frustrated with the merchant.
- Werther encounters the Grey Dog Pirates, whose flag depicts a comical Husky. Amused by the design, he approaches them peacefully to ask for an East Blue map.
- The pirate captain, Julius, generously gives him a chart and reveals that her crew is heading toward the Grand Line to pursue their dreams of becoming famous pirates.
- In return, Werther advises Julius to seek out Haki, explaining that it can counter Devil Fruit powers and is essential for surviving and achieving ambitions in the Grand Line.
- Julius recognizes Werther as the infamous “Sword of Slaughter.” Frightened by his reputation, she and her crew quickly depart rather than risk offending him.
- After discovering that the faulty chart has actually taken him farther from Baratie, Werther resumes traveling at full speed. A week later, he finally reaches the restaurant.
- At Baratie, Werther requests that all of the restaurant’s signature dishes be prepared personally by Zeff and Sanji. When Sanji initially refuses because of the restaurant’s reservations and workload, Werther sends him to speak directly with Zeff.
- Zeff recognizes Werther’s description and becomes deeply concerned, warning Sanji that failure to satisfy Werther could result in Baratie being destroyed and its staff killed.
- Zeff agrees to cook personally, while Sanji returns to serve Werther. Werther is pleased and prepares to reward the restaurant generously with diamonds if the food meets his expectations.
Character Development
- Werther is shown as powerful, dangerous, and widely feared, but also humorous, generous, and passionate about food. Although he has a violent reputation, he treats Julius fairly because she helps him and offers useful information. His enthusiasm for fine cuisine reveals a softer, almost obsessive side.
- Julius is established as an ambitious but cautious pirate captain. She dreams of reaching the Grand Line and becoming famous, yet she is sensible enough to retreat after realizing Werther’s reputation.
- Sanji is introduced as a courteous waiter and skilled chef with firm principles. He initially refuses Werther’s demanding request but becomes nervous after learning who Werther is. Despite the danger, his attention remains easily distracted by beautiful women.
- Zeff is portrayed as experienced and normally confident when dealing with threats, but Werther’s reputation makes him genuinely uneasy. His decision to cook personally reflects both fear and responsibility toward Baratie and its employees.
Significant Themes
- Reputation versus reality: Werther’s violent reputation terrifies others even when he behaves peacefully, demonstrating how a feared name can control interactions before a person’s actions are known.
- Dreams and preparation: Werther tells Julius that ambition alone is insufficient; true success requires acquiring the strength and skills—represented by Haki—to survive future challenges.
- Generosity and reciprocity: Werther rewards those who help him, while Julius’s kindness leads him to offer valuable advice and future assistance.
- Passion for craftsmanship: Werther values food as an art and believes chefs deserve meaningful compensation for creating exceptional dishes.
- Comedy amid danger: The ridiculous Husky pirate flag, Werther’s faulty map, and Sanji’s flirtatious distractions contrast with the serious threat posed by Werther’s reputation.
Character Interactions
- Werther and Julius have a respectful exchange: he requests a map, she provides one freely, and he repays her with advice about Haki and an offer of future help.
- Julius and her crew leave nervously after identifying Werther, highlighting the intimidating effect of his reputation.
- Werther and Sanji clash mildly over the restaurant’s ordering procedures, with Werther insisting on food made by the top chefs and Sanji initially enforcing Baratie’s rules.
- Sanji and Zeff discuss Werther, and Zeff’s alarm reveals the danger he represents. Zeff then takes responsibility for preparing Werther’s meal.
- The chapter ends with Werther eagerly awaiting Baratie’s finest food, setting up a likely confrontation or important meeting involving Zeff, Sanji, and the notorious swordsman.
