As the group stared at the fire in confusion, unable to understand what had happened, a manhole cover suddenly scraped open in the street across from Drake.
Everyone turned toward the sound. The soldiers they had lost contact with were climbing out one by one. And they weren't alone: little figures clung to their clothes, waving their arms and celebrating their victory.
"We won!"
"We rescued our friends!"
"The princess's strange illness is cured!"
"And the factory's blown to bits!"
The Tontatta Tribe warriors brandished their distinctive weapons and laughed with the soldiers.
If I'm not mistaken, those are humans? Drake thought.
Just then, the soldiers spotted their comrades across the street and raised their hands in greeting. "Hey, Boss Drake! We finished the mission!"
Then they noticed Vergo and kept waving. "And you, the Donquixote Family officer! Thanks for assigning us our mission!"
What?!!!
Drake froze, then turned to Vergo with a peculiar look on his face. His voice sounded just as strange.
"Then I really must thank you on behalf of my men, Vice Admiral Vergo!"
Vergo could only stare at the sky, speechless.
All he had done was send one of the arguing squads to maintain order at the factory and the other out on patrol. Why had things worked out like this? Why had the men he sent on patrol been the real Donquixote Family soldiers?
The explosion had been loud enough for all of Dressrosa to hear. The flames that followed lit up the night.
Jack and Doflamingo had been desperately worried that Drake might succeed. But that was how things went: the more you dreaded something, the more likely it was to happen.
Looking at the distant Flame, Jack stammered, "Hey, Joker! Don't tell me that's..."
