A dark mass like storm clouds suddenly spread across the distant sky, racing toward them as a harsh, chaotic screeching filled the air.
Everyone looked up and shuddered. The things blotting out the sky like black clouds were bats!
The bats were glossy black, with a layer of soft down. Two large ears rose from each round little head, and beneath them, their tiny eyes were tightly shut.
Their teeth were terrifying. Two sharp fangs like a tiger's jutted above a dense row of pointed little teeth, just like a vampire's in a movie.
Their wings were curled. Several bats at the front had enormous wings, spanning a full hundred centimeters.
The wings were hairless, like thin membranes. The bones inside were clearly visible through them.
Those bones resembled the ribs of an umbrella, opening and folding at will as the bats swooped down to attack the Marines!
"Everyone, watch out!"
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Gunfire rang out in rapid succession as the Marines opened fire on the bats!
Black shapes streaked through the air, and bullets whistled past their ears.
Some Marines could not withstand the massive assault. The membranes of the bats' wings stretched all the way to their tails, with two small claws at the ends. The bats hung upside down from the Marines and tore into their flesh with sharp little teeth, drawing scream after scream.
The smell of blood drove the bats into an even greater frenzy. But the Marines' weapons were powerful too, and bats kept dropping from the sky like black rain!
An enormous bat was hit. The bones at the base of its wing snapped, blood showed through, and it wavered in midair. Then a streak of fire flashed past.
The bat fell to the ground, twitched for a while, and slowly died.
