Ch. 121I'll Sleep First
Plot points and events
- Ye Chen and Lucci fight for hours on the island’s open shore, where their abilities leave them evenly matched. Ye Chen then lures Lucci into a dense forest, where the trees limit Lucci’s Six Powers and Ye Chen’s agility gives him the advantage.
- Ye Chen repeatedly attacks from cover. Lucci avoids one ambush with Kami-e, which lets him sense changes in the airflow, and counters with Rankyaku, but he still fails to turn the fight in his favor.
- After a full day of combat, Ye Chen tries to postpone the fight until morning. Lucci instead threatens to kill him if he sleeps, and repeatedly attacks whenever Ye Chen closes his eyes.
- Three days of sleeplessness leave Ye Chen desperate. He proposes they leave the deserted island together and resume their fight elsewhere. Lucci agrees—but insists he will kill Ye Chen once they are off the island.
- Taking Lucci at his word, Ye Chen immediately lies down to sleep, arguing that Lucci promised to wait.
Character developments
- Ye Chen proves resourceful, using the forest and his agility to offset Lucci’s skill. He is willing to negotiate when combat and exhaustion become pointless, and uses humor and a loophole in Lucci’s promise to claim some much-needed rest.
- Lucci shows extraordinary discipline and persistence, continuing the fight despite setbacks and his own fatigue. His commitment to his cold notion of justice makes him almost impossible to sway through gratitude or kindness.
Significant themes
- Strategy versus raw skill: The terrain changes the balance of power, showing how adaptability can overcome an opponent’s advantages.
- Willpower and endurance: Though the fighters are evenly matched physically, Lucci’s relentless resolve gives him an edge over Ye Chen.
- Conflicting principles and uneasy cooperation: Lucci accepts a practical alliance to escape the island without softening his intent to kill Ye Chen.
- Humor amid danger: Ye Chen’s final technicality offers comic relief after days of brutal fighting and sleep deprivation.
Character interactions
- Ye Chen taunts and outmaneuvers Lucci, while Lucci answers with relentless attacks rather than conversation.
- Their exchanges reveal mutual recognition of each other’s abilities, but not trust or shared purpose.
- They agree to travel together only because they are stranded; Ye Chen treats the agreement as a temporary reprieve, while Lucci regards it as a delay before their next fight.
