The hill was not particularly high, but its grass and trees grew lushly. The goats had chosen this place because of a clear spring, as well as a naturally formed cave beside it. The cave extended thirty meters underground into a natural karst cavern, beneath which ran an underground river.
Whenever they were thirsty, they could leap along the cavern's jagged edges and descend underground, escaping their hunters.
This was a natural shelter.
The billy goat lay lazily against the grass. He understood survival well; at the very least, the seven ewes beside him knew that following him would keep them safe.
Not even a ferocious leopard could enter this cave.
Yet he had no appetite for grass right now. His head felt feverish, and a strange voice kept calling out in his mind.
