Ch. 41The Clamor Faded
Plot and events
- Blue Martial Arts Hall has become unusually quiet after many apprentices leave, emptying much of the courtyard and Training Ground.
- Chen Mo and Zhao Chuan practice the Seventy-Three Forms together. Chen’s progress is gradual and grounded in repetition: steadier footwork, better control of force, and improved endurance.
- Zhao Chuan wonders whether the departed apprentices will regret leaving, especially as Zhao Ming appears distracted and struggles to complete his practice.
- Wang Lie repeatedly strikes a wooden post until Zhou Ye warns him about his injured knuckles and makes him wrap his hand. Wang Lie admits that strength alone may not guarantee victory, but says he still needs to grow stronger—for the assessment and for what comes afterward.
- Instructor Li checks Chen Mo’s training record and confirms that the Quarterly Assessment will proceed as planned. He urges Chen to keep training, remain steady, and avoid rushing out of fear.
- Zhao Chuan explains that his father believes training could help the hall in the future. He jokes that his ambitions have shrunk from leading assignments to simply making it back safely.
- As evening falls, Chen Mo stays behind to complete the forms alone, then leaves the empty Training Ground.
Character development
- Chen Mo shows patience and discipline, recognizing progress in small improvements rather than sudden gains. Though unsettled by events beyond the hall, he follows Instructor Li’s advice and stays focused.
- Zhao Chuan remains playful but is more sober about danger and the future. His determination to stay is rooted in loyalty and a realistic wish to be useful.
- Wang Lie questions his old belief that sheer strength ensures victory, yet continues training with a broader, still-unspoken purpose.
- Zhao Ming seems troubled and unfocused, hinting at anxiety or uncertainty about the situation beyond the hall.
- Zhou Ye shows quiet concern for Wang Lie through practical help, while Instructor Li offers Chen measured guidance.
Character interactions
- Chen and Zhao Chuan train together, trade jokes, and candidly acknowledge the hall’s dwindling numbers.
- Zhou Ye looks after Wang Lie’s injured hand while disguising his concern as a need for a sparring partner.
- Chen speaks with Wang Lie about why he keeps training, but lets him leave his future purpose unexplained.
- Instructor Li checks Chen’s progress and separates the upcoming assessment from the troubling events in the mountains.
