Ch. 221Si Xue: Keep That Woman Away, Her Sour Stench Is Choking Me
Chapter Summary
Plot developments
Black Cat asks to buy one of Liu Zheng’s Five Virtues, specifically Trust, believing it can withstand the character’s burden. Liu Zheng is unable to agree because the virtues belong to the Restaurant and he lacks authority to trade them. During the conversation, Si Xue calls Liu Zheng and warns him not to sell the characters, threatening to burn him and use him as a substance for Phoenix if he disobeys. This confirms that the Five Virtues are rare and valuable even to Si Xue.
Character interactions and developments
Si Xue mocks Liu Zheng’s relationship with the Novelist, calling her someone destined to become a widow and criticizing his choice of lover. Liu Zheng avoids answering the insult and remains respectful toward his boss. The Novelist quietly supports him and pretends not to overhear the phone call out of respect. Black Cat initially shows interest in Trust but becomes relieved when the deal fails, recognizing that it might not be able to bear the character’s pressure. Hishikibe later serves Liu Zheng a special drink, Joy Turns to Sorrow, while maintaining her intimidating, assassin-like demeanor.
The liquor and its effect
The drink is a Quill Club specialty that grants +1 Mental attribute and increased resistance to mental attacks. Its “impurities” are actually tiny characters. After Liu Zheng drinks it, the characters rearrange into a story, causing him to lose consciousness and enter an immersive vision.
Dream narrative
Liu Zheng experiences the life of a happily married white-collar worker whose wife, descended from outsiders, retains customs not fully assimilated into Metropolis. After she becomes pregnant, he devotes himself to protecting her and their unborn child. However, she is brutally murdered while bringing him a forgotten USB drive, and their eight-month-old child is discarded and killed as well. Dissatisfied with the Public Security Bureau’s failure to investigate, Liu Zheng spends thirteen years seeking revenge. A lottery win funds his efforts, and he eventually captures a Werewolf thug connected to the crime. Under torture, the thug admits that it was not the killer but knows who committed the murder: Liu Zheng’s former boss.
Themes
The chapter explores the danger and burden of virtues, especially the difference between merely following rules and truly embodying them. It also emphasizes loyalty, ownership, and authority through the dispute over the Five Virtues. The liquor’s story introduces themes of grief, revenge, institutional failure, social prejudice, and the fragile boundary between happiness and sorrow. Its note—questioning whether one should laugh or cry when emotions are manipulated—foreshadows the unsettling nature of the vision.
