The iron gate creaked as the key turned. The milky-white glow on its bars gradually faded, but the smell of rust lingering in Xia Lun's nostrils grew stronger.

Xia Lun was about to push the gate open when a heavy object landed in the straw behind him with a muffled thud.

"You're going out without Blood Wax? Are you trying to get yourself killed?" the girl called from above.

Blood Wax?

Xia Lun had heard another unfamiliar term. He turned and found a small wooden box on the ground behind him.

An exquisite figure was carved into the lid. The box sat slightly open, revealing three reddish-brown candles of different sizes and a small tuft of pale tinder.

There was no doubt that the box contained the so-called Blood Wax.

Though he had no idea what Blood Wax was for, Xia Lun did not ask.

From what he had seen, the girl in the ventilation duct was compulsively talkative. Even if he said nothing, she would explain it herself.

Sure enough, the silence lasted only a second before the girl gave a light cough and shot him a sidelong glance.

"Do you know what Blood Wax is?" No sooner had she asked than she answered her own question. "Forget it. Someone who doesn't even know what a Pilgrimage is couldn't possibly know."

"You've been locked up so long that you might not know the apocalypse has come. Since it began, darkness has been cursed. It actively devours light. Ordinary flames go out quickly when darkness closes in; only Blood Wax blessed through a special Ritual can barely resist it."

Xia Lun picked up the box, took out the Blood Wax, and slipped it into an empty slot on his Armed Belt Buckle. "The lamps in the corridor burn Blood Wax?"
