A steaming river of scarlet blood flowed through the grooves of the Ritual carved into the square. The excess spilled over and followed the slight slope of the ground into the clear waterway.

Drops of blood struck the water, throwing up little red splashes. They spattered against the wooden hull of a boat, leaving brown stains like brands. Feilier sat on the gunwale, swinging her boots idly as she stared at the river turning red. The world might be ending, but the man-made waterway still worked. The Dunwo River flowed quietly on, just as it always had. Its gentle murmur should have been clear in her ears, but all Feilier could hear was the cult priests' long, irritating ritual chant.
