A few hours later, Xia Lun and White Line hurried back to Whitewash City by train.
Unlike a normal place like Hermaniel City, Whitewash City grew livelier the later it got. Though it was two in the morning, bursts of gunfire and explosions still rang out from time to time, and the air smelled of gunpowder.
Xia Lun had planned to ask the butler to send a car for him. But as he left the station square, he ran into a gang of Getaway Robbers, and they were out of their minds enough to attack him.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
After four shots, the robbers dropped dead before they could fire. Xia Lun pulled open the car door, tossed the driver—whose head had burst like a watermelon—out of the seat, then calmly sat down in the blood-soaked driver's seat.
White Line climbed in too, though she chose the corpse-free back seat.
"Xia Lun, there's a sniper rifle back here!" she said in disbelief. "The sights and everything are set up professionally."
"Then they weren't robbers." Xia Lun raised his hand and brought the gun butt down beside him, shattering the already cracked window. "They were probably professional Gunner types who mistook us for their targets."
He adjusted the rearview mirror and saw White Line rummaging through a backpack. Soon, she pulled out a sheet of paper.
"Xia Lun, they really were assassins. This is their contract." White Line touched the red Painter's hat on her head. "Their actual target was a Railway Manager wearing a red hat... Oh."
"Their work is terrible," Xia Lun said. "You're supposed to stake out the target and track their movements before making a move. Who attacks the first person they see? Zi, put on your Seat Belt. I'm driving."
White Line nodded and obediently
