Ch. 261Pokémon Modification

Chapter Summary: “Pokémon Modification”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Heiduo, Violet, and Electivire bring the unconscious Professor Mai to a laboratory on the fourth floor of Team Rocket’s base.
  • After waking Mai, Heiduo demands her assistance in developing an injection capable of enhancing a Pokémon’s brain.
  • Mai initially refuses, but Heiduo persuades her by threatening to give her valuable genetic research to other scientists. Because she is obsessed with continuing her experiments, Mai agrees.
  • Mai becomes fascinated by Electivire, recognizing it as an unusual Evolution and requesting biological samples. Heiduo allows her to collect fur, keratin, and blood, but prevents her from taking more invasive tissue samples.
  • At Mai’s laboratory, Heiduo and Violet encounter a squad of Cerulean Gym maids and Trainers searching the room. Violet convinces the squad leader—an acquaintance—to leave the laboratory to them. The squad withdraws after noticing Electivire’s intimidating strength.
  • Heiduo brings Mai’s three assistants back to the lab. Mai orders them to restart the equipment and resume work, revealing that she expects to continue experimenting even though she may soon be working under the Pokémon Association.
  • Heiduo releases Marshtomp and explains that he wants a brain-enhancing injection. Mai admits she has never attempted such a procedure and warns that clinical testing will be necessary, but Heiduo agrees immediately.
  • Marshtomp is placed on the testing platform. Mai and her assistants begin collecting blood, tissue, and Gastro Acid samples while Violet volunteers to stand guard outside.
  • Marshtomp’s examination reveals that it possesses unusually powerful Gastro Acid. Mai becomes excited by the discovery and orders an assistant to bring out a Potent Nutrient Agent, suggesting that the next stage of the experiment is about to begin.

Character Developments

  • Heiduo demonstrates confidence, strategic thinking, and a willingness to use pressure rather than violence. He understands Mai’s obsession with research and uses it to secure her cooperation. He also shows strong faith in Marshtomp’s resilience and his own ability to manage possible side effects.
  • Professor Mai is portrayed as highly intelligent, obsessive, and morally detached. Her commitment to genetic experimentation outweighs concerns about loyalty, danger, or ethics. She quickly shifts from defiance to enthusiasm once offered the chance to continue researching, and her curiosity about Electivire reveals her relentless scientific appetite.
  • Violet continues to support Heiduo, helping him gain access to the laboratory and volunteering to protect the experiment from interruption. Her concern for Marshtomp after learning about Enhancement Agents’ side effects shows her compassionate and cautious side.
  • Electivire is both a powerful protector and a potential research subject. It becomes visibly uneasy under Mai’s predatory scientific attention and instinctively moves closer to Heiduo for protection.
  • Marshtomp becomes the central test subject. Its unusual Gastro Acid gives Mai a new source of excitement and may influence the experimental treatment.

Significant Themes

  • Science versus ethics: Mai’s research involves Pokémon experimentation and genetic modification, with little concern for consent or suffering. Heiduo accepts the risks because the potential benefits are important to him.
  • Obsession and ambition: Mai’s dedication to research is so strong that she will cooperate with almost anyone who allows her to continue experimenting.
  • Trust and control: Heiduo trusts his ability to restrain Mai and control the experiment, while Mai cooperates only because her research remains within reach.
  • Power and intimidation: Electivire’s strength gives Heiduo leverage, discouraging others from interfering and ensuring Mai does not betray him.
  • Risk for advancement: Heiduo willingly exposes Marshtomp to an untested procedure in pursuit of greater power, reflecting his competitive desire to keep pace with powerful Trainers such as Red.

Character Interactions

  • Heiduo and Mai engage in a tense negotiation in which Heiduo counters her sarcasm and refusal with calm, calculated pressure.
  • Mai’s fascination with Electivire creates comic tension, as she views the Pokémon less as a companion or threat and more as a valuable biological specimen.
  • Violet acts as Heiduo’s ally, persuading the Cerulean Gym squad to leave and later guarding the laboratory.
  • The laboratory assistants obey Mai despite their confusion, demonstrating her authority over them and the intimidating presence of Heiduo and Electivire.
  • Mai and Heiduo share a practical, uneasy cooperation: he provides access to Marshtomp and research materials, while she begins the dangerous procedure he needs.

Ch. 262The Goal: Seeking the Ancient Past!!

Chapter Summary: “The Goal: Seeking the Ancient Past!!”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Professor Mai injects Marshtomp with three full doses of a teal-green Enhancement Agent. Unlike most Pokémon, Marshtomp can apparently endure the unusually large amount of energy.
  • Mai becomes increasingly excited about the experiment, believing Marshtomp’s immense energy reserves could help her achieve her scientific ambitions: creating an “ultimate body” capable of surpassing Mewtwo and the Fused Legendary Birds.
  • Heiduo grows uneasy at Mai’s fanaticism but remains focused on protecting Marshtomp during the procedure.
  • A disturbance erupts outside the laboratory. Indigo Plateau Trainers arrive, claiming Professor Mai is wanted for eight criminal charges and must be arrested.
  • Violet blocks their path, refusing to let them enter. Heiduo joins her and attempts to delay the search for two hours, giving Mai time to finish treating Marshtomp.
  • When the Trainers refuse to compromise, Heiduo summons Scizor. Rather than directly attacking, he orders it to use Superpower on the ceiling, causing a collapse that blocks the corridor.
  • Heiduo falsely claims the cave-in was caused by unstable soil. Intimidated by Scizor’s overwhelming strength and uncertain how many other powerful Pokémon Heiduo possesses, the Indigo Plateau captain agrees to wait two hours.
  • Inside the lab, Umbreon and Electivire are horrified by Mai’s dangerous experimental setup, comparing it to the terrifying creation of Pokémon such as Mewtwo, Porygon, and Genesect.
  • Mai explains her true scientific objective: using Marshtomp’s unusual gastric fluid and genetic potential to investigate atavism—restoring Pokémon traits from ancient evolutionary forms.

Character Developments

  • Heiduo becomes increasingly protective and decisive. Although he does not particularly care whether Mai is arrested, he refuses to let anyone interrupt Marshtomp’s treatment. He demonstrates both strategic thinking and a willingness to intimidate opponents without immediately resorting to violence.
  • Professor Mai is revealed as a fanatical and ethically unconcerned scientist. Her obsession with surpassing Mewtwo and the Fused Legendary Birds highlights her ambition, while her interest in ancient Pokémon genetics establishes her deeper research goal.
  • Violet shows courage and loyalty by standing alone against the Indigo Plateau Trainers and firmly defending the laboratory.
  • Marshtomp is established as unusually resilient, possessing enough energy to withstand an experimental dose that would normally be fatal or dangerous.
  • Umbreon and Electivire react with fear and disbelief to the experiment, emphasizing how extreme and unnatural Mai’s methods appear even to Pokémon.
  • The Indigo Plateau captain proves cautious and pragmatic. Though pressured to arrest Mai quickly, he recognizes that confronting Heiduo directly could be dangerous and chooses to wait.

Significant Themes

  • Scientific ambition versus ethics: Mai’s pursuit of genetic secrets ignores the safety and consequences of her experiments.
  • The dangers of playing with nature: The Enhancement Agent and the attempt to revive ancient genetic traits echo the artificial creation of powerful Pokémon such as Mewtwo and Genesect.
  • Protection and loyalty: Heiduo prioritizes Marshtomp’s survival and treatment, while Violet supports him despite facing superior numbers.
  • Power and intimidation: Scizor’s strength allows Heiduo to resolve the confrontation through a calculated threat rather than an outright battle.
  • Evolution and the ancient past: Mai’s research focuses on atavism—the possibility of resurrecting traits from Pokémon’s distant evolutionary history.
  • Conflicting motives: Heiduo wants to save Marshtomp, Mai wants scientific discovery, and the authorities want to capture Mai, creating tension among all three sides.

Important Character Interactions

  • Mai’s excited claims about surpassing Mewtwo contrast with Heiduo’s skepticism and concern about her unstable personality.
  • Violet and Heiduo cooperate to prevent the Indigo Plateau team from entering the lab.
  • Heiduo negotiates with the squad captain but ultimately uses Scizor to force a delay.
  • Heiduo threatens Zheng Yong when the Trainer repeatedly challenges him, while the captain restrains Zheng Yong to avoid provoking a fight.
  • Umbreon and Electivire silently judge Mai’s experiment with horror, while Mai remains oblivious to their reactions and continues concentrating on Marshtomp.
  • Mai’s discovery of Marshtomp’s extraordinary gastric fluid changes her research direction, leading her to pursue the restoration of ancient Pokémon traits rather than merely treating Marshtomp’s intelligence problem.

Ch. 263Growing Up Just to Stir Up Trouble

Chapter Summary: “Growing Up Just to Stir Up Trouble”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Heiduo remains trapped outside a laboratory with several Indigo Plateau Trainers while the passage is blocked by rocks.
  • Instead of confronting them directly, he maintains Scizor by applying expensive Flash Steel Fluid and sharpening its claws, demonstrating his meticulous approach to Pokémon care.
  • Tension grows between Heiduo, Violet, and the Indigo Plateau group, especially because Zheng Yong repeatedly provokes him and appears jealous of Scizor’s strength.
  • More assault teams arrive, including Daisy and Lily, two of Violet’s fellow maid leaders and Misty’s sisters. Daisy warns Violet not to antagonize the politically connected Indigo Plateau Trainers.
  • A second-team captain aggressively confronts Heiduo and attempts to grab him. Heiduo restrains him, then kicks him into a wall when the man orders Hitmonlee to attack.
  • Scizor immediately follows with Bullet Punch, blasting Hitmonlee through the metal wall and frightening everyone present.
  • Zheng Yong accuses Heiduo of being a Team Rocket spy, further inflaming the situation. However, his own squad captain angrily rebukes him for deliberately causing trouble and jeopardizing everyone’s careers.
  • Heiduo privately decides to punish Zheng Yong later, even considering using Electivire to torture him, though he does not act because of the witnesses.
  • Umbreon suddenly calls Heiduo back, apparently shocked by a change in Marshtomp after its Enhancement Injection. Heiduo leaves with Scizor before the others can discover what happened.
  • Scizor destroys the remaining rock barrier with two strikes, impressing the assembled Trainers and leading them to conclude that Heiduo possesses the strength of a Top Trainer.

Character Developments

  • Heiduo: His dedication to Pokémon maintenance is emphasized; he personally handles Scizor’s lubrication and claw sharpening to maximize its training efficiency. His patience with provocateurs is wearing thin, revealing a violent and vengeful side beneath his normally practical demeanor. His careful reading of people’s motives also shows growing psychological awareness.
  • Scizor: Demonstrates extraordinary physical power and loyalty, effortlessly defeating Hitmonlee and pulverizing the rock barrier. Its strength significantly changes how others perceive Heiduo.
  • Violet: Continues to support Heiduo despite the political risks. She becomes increasingly aware that Zheng Yong is the real source of the conflict and begins viewing him with disgust.
  • Daisy: Acts protectively toward Violet and warns her about the dangers of provoking the Indigo Plateau Trainers. She is perceptive enough to recognize that the conflict is being manufactured by Zheng Yong.
  • Zheng Yong: Is exposed as a malicious troublemaker driven by jealousy and resentment toward Heiduo. His reckless accusations endanger his entire team.
  • The squad captain: Initially tries to avoid conflict but ultimately turns against Zheng Yong when the latter’s behavior threatens his career. He is shown to be more perceptive and pragmatic than his subordinates.
  • Marshtomp: Though not physically present, it becomes the source of major anticipation because its reaction to the Enhancement Injection apparently astonishes Umbreon.
  • Umbreon: Serves as the messenger for the unexpected development involving Marshtomp.

Significant Themes

  • Trainer responsibility: The chapter stresses that a Trainer’s duties extend beyond issuing battle commands. Proper maintenance, logistics, and care are essential to a Pokémon’s performance and longevity.
  • Competence versus empty authority: Heiduo’s practical skill and Scizor’s genuine strength contrast with the Indigo Plateau Trainers’ reliance on status, numbers, and political connections.
  • The danger of needless provocation: Zheng Yong’s attempts to stir up conflict nearly create a serious battle and threaten his entire team. The chapter criticizes people who manipulate others into fighting while avoiding responsibility themselves.
  • Power and reputation: Scizor’s overwhelming strength forces the other Trainers to reassess Heiduo, showing how quickly power can alter social dynamics.
  • Restraint and vengeance: Heiduo avoids killing or seriously retaliating against Zheng Yong because of the crowd, but his private desire for revenge reveals the tension between self-control and anger.
  • Loyalty amid political pressure: Violet’s willingness to stand by Heiduo, despite Daisy’s warnings, highlights the importance of trust and cooperation.

Important Character Interactions

  • Heiduo and Violet discuss the practical demands of caring for Steel-type Pokémon, with Violet gaining respect for his thoroughness.
  • Daisy warns Violet against antagonizing the Indigo Plateau group, but Violet’s loyalty to Heiduo remains firm.
  • Heiduo physically humiliates the second-team captain after the man attacks him, while Scizor defeats Hitmonlee.
  • Zheng Yong’s accusations trigger the squad captain’s furious condemnation, exposing the internal resentment within the Indigo Plateau team.
  • Heiduo leaves the confrontation after Umbreon summons him, prioritizing the mysterious change in Marshtomp over continuing the dispute.

Ch. 264Mega Swampert!!! (Pseudo)

Chapter Summary: “Mega Swampert!!! (Pseudo)”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Heiduo enters Professor Mai’s laboratory and discovers that her experiment on Marshtomp has succeeded.
  • Marshtomp has transformed into a massive, muscular Swampert. Although its level remains 35 and its Ability is still Damp, Professor Mai claims its natural talent now rivals that of Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon such as Dragonite and Tyranitar.
  • The experiment successfully restores Swampert’s intelligence and normal Energy distribution. Its unusual Gastro Acid has also evolved: it can temporarily convert food into enhanced physical power, though relying solely on eating would take twenty years to reach the League’s recorded Energy Level of fifteen.
  • Heiduo realizes that Swampert has regained genuine emotions and gratitude. Its Friendship rises dramatically from 75 to 130, and it displays happiness and affection toward him.
  • Relieved that Swampert is mentally normal again, Heiduo prepares to leave Kanto and return to Johto. He asks Professor Mai to delete all data concerning Swampert, then destroys the laboratory computers himself to prevent others from exploiting Swampert’s abilities.
  • Heiduo retrieves Electivire’s genetic samples, recalls his Pokémon, and exits the laboratory with Scizor.
  • Outside, Violet anxiously waits for news. Heiduo thanks her for delaying the Indigo Plateau Trainers, which gave Professor Mai enough time to complete the experiment.
  • Heiduo permits the Indigo Plateau squad to enter the laboratory and take Professor Mai. He believes they will recruit her rather than harm her, unlike the International Police.
  • Although he is eager to leave for Johto, Heiduo decides to deal with Zheng Yong first. Zheng, who was expelled from the squad, is plotting revenge and intends to report Heiduo to powerful Indigo Plateau Trainers.
  • The chapter ends with Heiduo considering how to eliminate Zheng Yong without leaving evidence.

Character Developments

  • Heiduo: Becomes deeply relieved and emotional upon seeing Swampert restored to normal intelligence. His protective instincts intensify, leading him to destroy all records of Swampert’s enhancement. Despite wanting to return to Johto, he remains determined to settle his grudge against Zheng Yong.
  • Swampert: Evolves from a mentally impaired Marshtomp into a powerful, intelligent, emotionally expressive Pokémon. It shows affection toward Heiduo, and its greatly increased Friendship confirms its understanding of his care.

  • Zheng Yong: Is abandoned by his squad after his misconduct and becomes consumed by resentment. He believes he can use Indigo Plateau authorities to retaliate against Heiduo, unaware that Heiduo is already planning against him.
  • Squad Captain: After initially losing control of the situation, he focuses on recovering authority and gaining credit by taking Professor Mai into custody.

Significant Themes

  • Restoration versus enhancement: The experiment’s true success is not Swampert’s physical power but the recovery of its mind, emotions, and natural Energy balance.
  • The dangers of scientific exploitation: Heiduo destroys Swampert’s records because he fears others will covet and misuse its unusual Gastro Acid.
  • Loyalty and gratitude: Swampert’s emotional response and increased Friendship show that genuine care can create a powerful bond beyond simple obedience.
  • Consequences and revenge: Zheng Yong’s betrayal and Heiduo’s intention to punish him reinforce the idea that harmful actions eventually bring retaliation.
  • Power and morality: Heiduo is uncomfortable with needless violence, yet the chaotic events in Kanto have pushed him toward harsher decisions.

Important Character Interactions

  • Heiduo and Swampert: Their reunion is affectionate and emotional. Swampert gently responds to Heiduo’s touch, while Heiduo celebrates its restored personality.
  • Heiduo and Professor Mai: Their relationship combines gratitude, suspicion, and practical cooperation. Heiduo acknowledges her achievement but remains wary enough to verify and destroy the experimental data.
  • Heiduo and Violet: Heiduo openly thanks Violet for protecting the experiment by delaying the Indigo Plateau Trainers. Their mutual trust strengthens.
  • Heiduo and the Indigo Plateau squad: Heiduo permits them to enter the laboratory once his objective is complete, effectively leaving Professor Mai to their custody.
  • Heiduo and Zheng Yong: Their conflict remains unresolved, but Heiduo’s final decision establishes that he intends to retaliate carefully and decisively.

Ch. 265The Cold Reality Beneath Truth, Goodness, and Beauty

Chapter Summary

1. Key Plot Points and Events

  • Outside the Saffron City Game Corner, Misty receives the casualty report from the assault on Team Rocket’s underground base.
  • The base has been cleared. The League has captured 536 Team Rocket combatants and 251 clerical workers, while 112 combatants and three clerical staff are dead. Seventy-four Team Rocket Pokémon also died, and 3,768 Pokémon were seized, including 707 that had been sold through the Black Net.
  • Misty learns that Heiduo helped Violet’s assault squad break through Team Rocket’s fourth-floor defenses and clashed with the Indigo Plateau Trainers. She orders her aide not to investigate the dispute further, accepting that relations with Indigo Plateau may worsen.
  • The League’s own losses are reported: 48 wounded, 11 dead—including five hired personnel—and 16 Pokémon killed.
  • Tenma comforts Misty, reminding her that the fighters understood the risks and that the operation is not yet finished because Team Rocket’s executives and hidden backers have not been found.
  • Misty worries about Red, whom she believes is still somewhere in Saffron City.
  • Heiduo and Violet emerge from the Game Corner and encounter the battlefield’s medical camp, where severely wounded Trainers and Pokémon are being treated and the dead are placed in body bags.
  • Violet becomes physically ill from the aftermath, and Heiduo supports her. The scene forces him to recognize that the operation was not merely a criminal raid but an actual war.
  • Heiduo’s anger shifts toward Giovanni, Team Rocket’s executives, and the wealthy powers who funded and enabled Team Rocket while sacrificing ordinary members for their ambitions.

2. Character Developments

  • Misty demonstrates leadership and political awareness, but the scale of the deaths deeply affects her. She begins to confront the moral burden of sending people into battle and questions who is truly responsible for the conflict.
  • Tenma acts as a stabilizing presence, reassuring Misty that the casualties were anticipated and that compensation will be provided, while reminding her that the larger conspiracy remains unresolved.
  • Heiduo undergoes a major emotional shift. Though he believes Team Rocket members chose their fate, witnessing the mutilated dead and wounded makes him reject war and glorify neither side. His hatred of Giovanni and the executives becomes personal and ideological.
  • Violet loses her mission-focused composure once she sees the battlefield’s consequences. Her vomiting reveals the delayed psychological shock experienced by someone unaccustomed to real combat.
  • Red, although absent from the scene, remains important through Misty’s concern for his safety and the implication that he is involved in another part of the operation.

3. Significant Themes

  • The human cost of war: Statistics become horrifyingly real when Misty, Heiduo, and Violet see the bodies, wounds, and grieving Trainers.
  • Responsibility and complicity: The chapter argues that Team Rocket’s violence was enabled not only by Giovanni but also by wealthy elites who financed and politically protected the organization.
  • Greed disguised as ambition: The narrative questions the idea that criminal empires are built from admirable “dreams,” presenting them instead as expressions of selfish desire and exploitation.
  • Ideological manipulation: Statements such as “the strong devour the weak” are portrayed as excuses created by powerful killers, then repeated by followers until they become accepted social truths.
  • Civilization versus regression: Team Rocket’s actions represent a return to fear, distrust, and brute force, threatening the progress humanity made by building organized society.
  • The contrast between fiction and reality: Heiduo realizes that real violence is far more disturbing than battle scenes in entertainment; physical injuries, screams, and grief cannot be softened or made heroic.

4. Character Interactions

  • Misty and the lead maid discuss the assault’s results, casualties, and political consequences, with Misty firmly ending the inquiry into Heiduo’s conflict with Indigo Plateau.
  • Tenma comforts Misty when she struggles with guilt and reminds her that the battle is still ongoing.
  • Heiduo and Violet leave the base together and silently process the devastation outside.
  • Violet clings to Heiduo and vomits from shock; he responds gently by supporting her and patting her back rather than criticizing her reaction.
  • Misty thinks of Red from afar, emotionally connecting the battlefield outside the Game Corner with the unresolved danger elsewhere in the city.

Ch. 266Meeting Familiar Faces

Chapter Summary: “Meeting Familiar Faces”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • After Team Rocket’s defeat in Saffron City, Silph Co. Building collapses. Heiduo explains to Violet that war inevitably brings death and reassures her that the crisis is over.
  • Heiduo decides to leave Kanto rather than remain for the three-hundred-thousand reward, asking Violet to tell Misty goodbye and to contact him if necessary.
  • Before leaving, Heiduo returns to Team Rocket’s underground base to settle his grudge against Zheng Yong. He disguises himself in Team Rocket clothing, wears a gas mask, and coordinates with Arbok, which hides inside a wall.
  • Heiduo ambushes Zheng Yong as he passes through an underground corridor. Arbok attacks with a corrosive Poison move, killing Zheng Yong instantly. Heiduo escapes through the ventilation system while the corridor fills with Haze.
  • The Indigo Plateau group discovers Zheng Yong’s body, but their squad leader chooses to conceal the truth, reporting the death as a normal casualty. The others remain silent because Zheng Yong was disliked and they do not want to provoke Heiduo, whom they view as a powerful trainer with a promising future.
  • Heiduo returns to the surface and lies to a police officer, claiming he had gone to the bathroom. Using his identification badge, he passes through checkpoints and walks from Saffron City toward Vermilion City, intending to take a ferry back to Johto.
  • At the southern exit of Saffron City, Heiduo unexpectedly encounters Red, Green, and Professor Oak.

Character Developments

  • Heiduo becomes more decisive and ruthless. Although he generally avoids killing, his anger toward Zheng Yong leads him to plan and execute a deliberate assassination. He feels relief rather than guilt afterward, suggesting that Zheng Yong’s actions had pushed him beyond his usual limits.
  • Heiduo also shows strong tactical ability through disguise, deception, coordinated Pokémon attacks, and careful planning.
  • Violet is shaken by the destruction and deaths caused by the conflict. Her brief farewell with Heiduo reveals that she has grown accustomed to relying on him and is surprised by his abrupt departure.
  • Zheng Yong is isolated from the main group, reinforcing that his behavior has made him unpopular. His death is treated as an acceptable loss by those who disliked him.
  • Arbok demonstrates complete loyalty to Heiduo, carrying out the assassination without hesitation.
  • Umbreon provides curious, somewhat humorous commentary and learns that Heiduo is capable of wanting someone dead.
  • The Indigo Plateau squad leader proves pragmatic and self-protective, choosing not to investigate Zheng Yong’s murder rather than risk antagonizing Heiduo.

Significant Themes

  • The inevitability and cost of war: Heiduo reminds Violet that death is inherent to warfare, emphasizing the destruction left behind even after victory.
  • Moral ambiguity and revenge: Heiduo’s killing of Zheng Yong is presented as a private act of retribution rather than an official battle. The indifference of the witnesses highlights how easily violence is justified when the victim is disliked.
  • Self-preservation and opportunism: The squad leader and others suppress the truth because protecting themselves and maintaining their future prospects matters more than justice for Zheng Yong.
  • Identity and disguise: Heiduo’s Team Rocket clothing and mask allow him to conceal his identity, while official badges allow him to move safely through the city. The chapter repeatedly contrasts appearances with reality.
  • Transition after catastrophe: With Saffron City beginning to recover, Heiduo attempts to leave the conflict behind, but his unexpected reunion with familiar figures suggests that further events await him.

Ch. 269Gods Would Never Be Controlled by Humans

Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Tenma arrives at the Saffron City Pokémon Association headquarters after successfully completing a mission for Teng Jun.
  • He questions why Teng Jun protected three former Team Rocket executives—Sabrina, Lt. Surge, and Koga—despite their hostility and the political cost of helping them.
  • Teng Jun reveals that their protection was part of a larger bargain: the executives’ former allies and financial backers must pay for the failed Rayquaza Capture Plan.
  • Teng Jun shows Tenma the ruined research facility where the plan collapsed. The project, which consumed years of work and over a billion in funding, failed after Rayquaza escaped only a little more than a month after being captured.
  • Teng Jun explains that Team Rocket has lost its investors, resource channels, Black Net, and other support following Mewtwo’s escape and the defeat of the Legendary Birds. Without those resources, the organization can no longer pursue its former ambitions.
  • He believes the three executives will eventually abandon Giovanni because they are young and will not sacrifice their entire futures for a declining organization.
  • Tenma leaves pleased after receiving tea, money, and reassurance that he may still have a future role in Johto’s Elite Four.
  • Yujian then visits Teng Jun. They discuss Tenma’s ambitions, the difference between seeking the Champion title and joining the Elite Four, and the political calculations behind Tenma’s alliance with Teng Jun.
  • They also discuss Heiduo, Yujian’s disciple, who recently entered the dangerous Team Rocket purge at Cerulean Gym while seeking help for one of his Pokémon.
  • Teng Jun offers Yujian assistance in obtaining either the Champion or Elite Four position. Yujian refuses, explaining that the Champion’s responsibilities would consume his entire life. Teng Jun accepts his decision and drops the subject.

Character Developments

  • Teng Jun is shown to be highly strategic and politically astute. He saves the three executives not out of simple compassion, but because their eventual disillusionment will weaken Team Rocket and turn them into useful allies. He also understands the ambitions and motives of older Trainers such as Tenma.
  • Tenma is revealed to be ambitious despite his age. He hopes to secure a place in the Elite Four rather than pursue the unstable Champion position. He recognizes Teng Jun’s growing power and begins aligning himself with him.
  • Yujian demonstrates strong self-awareness and independence. Although he could potentially obtain a powerful political position with Teng Jun’s help, he rejects it because he does not want the burdens and loss of freedom associated with being Champion.
  • Sabrina, Lt. Surge, and Koga are portrayed as young people whose loyalty to Team Rocket will likely weaken as the organization collapses. Their later paths suggest they eventually pursue separate lives.
  • Heiduo is characterized as courageous and impulsive, willing to enter dangerous conflicts to help his Pokémon, while Yujian remains concerned about his safety.
  • Giovanni and Team Rocket suffer a major strategic decline. Their influence, funding, information networks, and access to resources have largely disappeared after several major defeats.

Significant Themes

  • Power cannot be permanently controlled: The failed Rayquaza plan demonstrates the danger and futility of humans trying to dominate nature and Legendary Pokémon.
  • Political alliances are transactional: Teng Jun’s rescue of the executives is a calculated exchange, and Tenma’s loyalty is also influenced by money, status, and future opportunity.
  • People change with time: Teng Jun argues that young, ambitious individuals will eventually move on when their former cause can no longer fulfill their dreams.
  • Freedom versus authority: Yujian rejects high office because power brings responsibility and confinement. The chapter questions whether prestige is worth surrendering one’s personal life.
  • The decline of old powers: Team Rocket’s collapse, Giovanni’s loss of influence, and Tenma’s aging reflect the passing of an older generation and the rise of new political forces.
  • Nature and human ambition: The ruined Rayquaza facility symbolizes the consequences of arrogance and the limits of human control.

Character Interactions

  • Teng Jun and Tenma: Their conversation combines familial warmth with political negotiation. Teng Jun respects Tenma but sees through his probing questions and ambitions.
  • Teng Jun and Yujian: They share a close alliance built on common goals and history. Their teasing masks serious discussions about power, loyalty, and their future.
  • Yujian and Heiduo: Though Heiduo is absent, Yujian’s concern for him reveals a protective mentor-student relationship. Yujian admires his sincerity even while criticizing his recklessness.
  • Teng Jun and the Team Rocket executives: Their relationship is indirect but strategic. Teng Jun expects their current loyalty to fade once Team Rocket loses its ability to provide hope and opportunity.

Ch. 270Wave Incense

Chapter Summary: “Wave Incense”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Heiduo arrives in Olivine City by ferry with a severely seasick Umbreon and takes it to the Pokémon Center for treatment.
  • While waiting, he notices that news coverage is still dominated by the Battle Tower, showing the event’s continued popularity.
  • He retrieves a package that Yunsheng had left for him at the Pokémon Center. Miss Joy scolds him for leaving it unclaimed for so long.
  • The package contains an ancient azure incense burner identified as Wave Xun Incense. Burning charcoal inside produces a fragrance associated with Shelly, and prolonged exposure may increase the power of Water-type moves.
  • Heiduo and Umbreon discover that the incense must be smelled for roughly thirty minutes a day for more than a month, though its exact effectiveness is unknown.
  • The next day, Heiduo buys Umbreon a silver portable computer from Olivine’s digital center. The machine is expensive, costing 4,300, but Umbreon is eager to use it.
  • Heiduo also receives a 300,000 transfer from Cerulean Gym, despite believing he deserved less because he left before completing his involvement there. He feels guilty, particularly because he thinks of Violet and her generosity.
  • After registering an internet account, Heiduo and Umbreon visit a café. Umbreon immediately logs into the Trainer Forum and begins arguing with other users, especially someone claiming that Onix has never undergone Evolution.

Character Developments

  • Heiduo remains practical, cautious, and financially conscious. He is skeptical of the incense’s vague claims and dislikes spending money unnecessarily, but he indulges Umbreon by buying the computer.
  • His sense of responsibility and conscience are emphasized when he feels uneasy about receiving the full Cerulean Gym reward. His thoughts about Violet suggest lingering gratitude and guilt toward people who have helped him.
  • Heiduo also shows patience in dealing with Umbreon’s troublesome habits, even while privately criticizing its spending and internet obsession.
  • Umbreon quickly recovers from seasickness and becomes intensely excited about the package, only to lose interest once the incense proves less entertaining than expected.
  • Umbreon reveals a strong interest in modern technology and online interaction. Once it obtains internet access, it becomes an enthusiastic, argumentative forum user and dreams of becoming an efficient “internet troll.”
  • Its determination to improve its typing speed with the imagined “Shadowless Claw Typing Method” provides comic relief, while Heiduo’s final thought suggests Umbreon might better spend that effort exercising.

Significant Themes

  • Modern technology in the Pokémon world: Portable computers, internet accounts, data ports, and regulated online forums show that this world combines Pokémon elements with surprisingly advanced technology.
  • The value of items and training: The Wave Xun Incense introduces a mysterious, game-like enhancement item whose benefits depend on consistent long-term use rather than immediate power.
  • Responsibility and generosity: Heiduo’s discomfort with receiving more money than he feels he earned highlights his moral concerns and his awareness of debts to others.
  • Human–Pokémon companionship: Heiduo and Umbreon have a familiar, almost bickering relationship. Heiduo accommodates Umbreon’s desires, while Umbreon’s enthusiasm brings energy and humor to his otherwise practical life.
  • Comedy through contrast: Heiduo is restrained and pragmatic, whereas Umbreon is impulsive, excitable, and increasingly addicted to online arguments.

Character Interactions

  • Joy and Chansey care for Umbreon after its seasickness. Joy later reprimands Heiduo for neglecting to retrieve his package but still helps him recover it.
  • Heiduo and Umbreon discuss and examine the Wave Xun Incense together, with Umbreon initially much more enthusiastic about it.
  • Umbreon persuades Heiduo to purchase a portable computer, and Heiduo reluctantly gives in despite the high price.
  • At the café, Heiduo tries to hurry Umbreon along, but Umbreon is absorbed in an online argument and ignores him.
  • Their final exchange captures their dynamic: Umbreon pursues internet fame and insults, while Heiduo silently questions whether its energy would be better spent losing weight.

Ch. 271Moomoo Farm

Chapter Summary: “Moomoo Farm”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • After staying up all night watching web dramas, Umbreon is forcibly disconnected from Heiduo’s computer. Heiduo lectures it about moderation, while Umbreon secretly dreams of future smartphone technology.
  • Heiduo and Umbreon leave Olivine City by train, marking the continuation of Heiduo’s Gym Challenge after nearly a month at Jasmine’s Steel-type forest.
  • Heiduo reflects appreciatively on Jasmine’s guidance, especially her lesson that Electric-type Pokémon require electricity as part of their diet.
  • Heiduo plans to challenge Ecruteak Gym next. His current team—Swampert, Grovyle, and Riolu—should be strong enough to gain valuable battle experience on the journey.
  • Traveling leisurely along Route 39, Heiduo chooses not to use Garchomp because he has plenty of time before the Silver Conference. He enjoys the scenery, wild Pokémon, and slower pace of traveling.
  • He and Umbreon arrive at Moomoo Farm, a huge ranch producing Moomoo Milk and raising Miltank and Tauros.
  • Heiduo meets an elderly ranch worker, Uncle Su, who has poor hearing and uses an old Hoothoot to carry Heiduo and Umbreon over the fence.
  • Inside the farm’s shop, Heiduo discovers a variety of Moomoo Milk products, including yogurt, cheese, and cream. At Umbreon’s enthusiastic urging, he agrees to buy one of everything.

Character Developments

  • Heiduo becomes more patient and grounded. Rather than rushing toward the next Gym, he decides to appreciate the journey, scenery, encounters, and gradual growth of his Pokémon.
  • Heiduo continues to mature as a trainer by recognizing past mistakes, particularly his earlier misunderstanding of Electivire’s nutritional needs.
  • Umbreon shows its strong dependence on technology and its gluttonous, enthusiastic personality. It obeys Heiduo without complaint after losing computer access but immediately begins fantasizing about even more convenient future devices.
  • Umbreon’s appreciation for Johto’s healthier environment and its excitement over Moomoo Milk highlight its observant and food-loving nature.
  • Uncle Su is introduced as a friendly, hardworking elderly rancher. Though hard of hearing and somewhat visually impaired, he remains energetic, generous, and affectionate toward his Pokémon.
  • Hoothoot is portrayed as loyal but elderly, managing to lift Heiduo and Umbreon only briefly before dropping them over the low fence.

Significant Themes

  • The true meaning of travel: Heiduo reflects that Pokémon journeys are about meeting people, battling, forming bonds, discovering new Pokémon, and growing together—not merely rushing from Gym to Gym.
  • Balance and moderation: Heiduo’s conflict with Umbreon’s internet addiction contrasts with the broader idea that enjoyment—whether technology, food, or travel—should be kept within reasonable limits.
  • Environmental contrast: Johto’s lush forests and fertile soil are favorably compared with Kanto’s pollution, barren landscapes, and unhealthy Pokémon populations.
  • Respect for nature and local life: The farm represents cooperation between humans, Pokémon, and agriculture, with Pokémon assisting in breeding, food production, and daily labor.
  • Nostalgia and appreciation: Heiduo’s memories of Jasmine demonstrate gratitude toward those who have helped him and show how past experiences continue shaping his journey.

Character Interactions

  • Heiduo disciplines Umbreon over its all-night computer use, while Umbreon quietly plans ways to continue playing in the future.
  • Heiduo recalls Jasmine’s mentorship and how it prevented serious mistakes with Electivire.
  • Heiduo and Umbreon share their admiration for Johto’s forests, though Umbreon views the environment mainly through its effect on food and comfort.
  • Heiduo politely asks Uncle Su for Moomoo Milk and patiently accommodates the old man’s hearing difficulties.
  • Uncle Su uses Hoothoot to help Heiduo and Umbreon enter the farm, creating a humorous but warm interaction between the aging rancher, his Pokémon, and the travelers.
  • In the shop, Umbreon eagerly urges Heiduo to purchase every Moomoo Milk product, and Heiduo indulges it, ending the chapter on a cheerful, food-focused note.

Ch. 273Ecruteak's Origins and Mistakes

Chapter Summary: Ecruteak’s Origins and Mistakes

Key Plot Points and Events

  • On Route 39, Heiduo trains Riolu by having it battle a much stronger Gloom. Riolu uses Meteor Mash to defeat the Level 23 opponent after taking only one Razor Leaf.
  • Heiduo praises Riolu’s progress and reflects on his team’s levels. His younger Pokémon—Charmander, Riolu, and Grovyle—are still developing, while his higher-level Pokémon have begun leveling more slowly.
  • Heiduo heals Gloom with an Oran Berry, then collects its medicinal and valuable secretions. He leaves Berries as payment, establishing a mutually beneficial exchange rather than simply taking resources.
  • Heiduo arrives in Ecruteak City, an ancient, traditional city surrounded by forest. He reflects on its history and the tragedy of the two towers:
    • Tin Tower was destroyed by lightning and burned for three days.
    • Three Pokémon died, and humans failed to help.
    • Ho-Oh revived the Pokémon but abandoned humanity, while Lugia withdrew to the Whirl Islands.
  • At the Pokémon Center, Heiduo has his team healed and books a room. Umbreon stays behind to watch dramas on the computer.
  • Heiduo visits the Ecruteak Gym, but Gym Leader Morty is absent while helping someone find a lost Pokémon. Heiduo registers for a challenge the following afternoon.
  • Returning to the Pokémon Center, Heiduo is baffled by Umbreon’s bizarre drama about a romance between Magikarp and Wigglytuff, with Houndoom cast as the villain.
  • Heiduo decides to train Charmander and Riolu instead. He plans for Charmander to become the main sunny-weather attacker alongside Sceptile, while Riolu begins more serious battle training.
  • Their special training focuses on Riolu mastering Endure and Reversal and Charmander improving her move accuracy in preparation for the Gym battle.

Character Development

  • Riolu demonstrates significant growth, defeating a stronger opponent with impressive power while still showing restraint. Its eagerness for praise highlights its affectionate and competitive personality.
  • Heiduo continues developing as a thoughtful Trainer. He rewards wild Pokémon fairly, plans his team’s long-term strategy, and adapts his training around each Pokémon’s needs.
  • Charmander is revealed to be talented but inexperienced, especially with accuracy. She is treated affectionately by the rest of the team but is now ready to participate in more serious battles.
  • Umbreon remains lazy and entertainment-focused, preferring to watch dramas rather than accompany Heiduo to the Gym. Its behavior provides comic relief but also reflects its dependence on modern conveniences.
  • Heiduo’s larger team is becoming powerful, but the older, high-level Pokémon are nearing the point where growth will slow considerably.

Significant Themes

  • Humanity’s failure toward Pokémon: The history of Burned Tower shows how human indifference caused Ho-Oh and Lugia to lose faith in people.
  • Mutual respect between humans and Pokémon: Heiduo’s exchange with Gloom contrasts with the historical mistreatment in Ecruteak’s past. He takes what he needs but compensates Gloom fairly.
  • Growth and preparation: The chapter emphasizes gradual improvement rather than relying solely on already-powerful Pokémon.
  • Tradition versus modernity: Ecruteak’s ancient culture and architecture contrast with Olivine City’s technology and commerce, while Umbreon’s computer entertainment adds a modern element.
  • Balancing affection and discipline: Heiduo cares deeply for Charmander and Riolu but recognizes that they must train seriously to fulfill their future roles.

Character Interactions

  • Heiduo praises and comforts Riolu after its victory, reinforcing their close bond.
  • Heiduo heals Gloom and negotiates an informal exchange by leaving it Berries after collecting its valuable nectar.
  • Umbreon dismisses the Gym challenge as boring and chooses television instead, leading to humorous disagreement with Heiduo.
  • Heiduo encourages Charmander and Riolu to train together, assigning each a specific developmental goal. Both Pokémon eagerly accept his guidance.

Ch. 274Ecruteak Dance Theater and Online Arguments

Chapter Summary: Ecruteak Dance Theater and Online Arguments

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Heiduo’s Charmander battles Riolu but is defeated after taking a direct Aura Sphere. Heiduo realizes Charmander lacks battle awareness and needs to learn how to dodge instead of simply enduring attacks.
  • Charmander becomes upset and expresses its frustration by pinching Heiduo’s ear. Heiduo apologizes and comforts it, while Riolu remains confused by the emotional exchange.
  • Back at their room, Umbreon suggests attending a performance at Ecruteak Dance Theater. Heiduo initially questions the high ticket price—888—but researches the event and learns it is a rare cultural performance.
  • The theater presents the Dance of Gratitude, a traditional hour-long dance performed only twice a year by five geisha and numerous backup dancers. The dance honors Ho-Oh and Lugia, who were once believed to travel great distances to watch it.
  • The tradition dates back over a thousand years, to the construction of Bell Tower and Tin Tower, but has nearly disappeared. Only five people still know the complete dance.
  • Umbreon admits that its real reason for wanting to attend is to prove itself in an online argument. It had bragged on the Trainer Forum about its wealth, rare Pokémon, expensive food, and portable computer, then challenged another Elite Trainer to settle the dispute in person.
  • The opposing trainer, Hongye, demanded that Umbreon first obtain a ticket to the Dance Theater. Heiduo accepts the challenge and agrees to attend, reasoning that Umbreon’s claims were mostly truthful.
  • At the theater, Hongye waits outside with his Murkrow, expecting Umbreon’s owner to appear. He is skeptical that the challenger will actually come and intends to defeat him in a Pokémon battle.
  • Hongye’s background and ambitions are introduced: he is a thirteen-year-old Elite Trainer from Sinnoh who admires Sidney, loves Dark-type Pokémon, and dreams of becoming a “righteous great villain” and eventually surpassing Sidney.

Character Developments

  • Heiduo: Shows himself to be a patient but practical trainer. He identifies Charmander’s weaknesses while still encouraging its future potential as a Charizard. He also responds calmly to Umbreon’s embarrassment rather than punishing it, and becomes genuinely interested in the Dance of Gratitude.
  • Charmander: Displays emotional sensitivity and stubbornness. It is embarrassed and angry after losing to Riolu but seeks comfort from Heiduo rather than continuing the battle.
  • Riolu: Demonstrates strong fighting instincts and enthusiasm but poor emotional understanding. Its Aura Power allows it to sense others, yet it cannot interpret Charmander’s reaction or Heiduo’s comforting behavior.
  • Umbreon: Reveals a mischievous, competitive, and prideful personality. Its interest in the theater is largely motivated by online bragging and the desire to win an argument, though it is relieved when Heiduo does not scold it.
  • Hongye: Is introduced as hot-tempered, proud, and highly competitive. Despite his young age, he is already an Elite Trainer. He idolizes Dark-type Pokémon and hopes to challenge negative stereotypes about them.
  • Hongye’s mother: Appears caring but mildly exasperated by her son’s online friendship and competitive behavior.
  • Murkrow: Serves as Hongye’s loyal companion and reflects his preference for Dark-type Pokémon.

Significant Themes

  • Training and growth: Charmander’s defeat highlights the importance of battle awareness, adaptability, and learning from mistakes rather than relying on toughness.
  • Emotional intelligence: The contrast between Riolu’s fighting ability and its inability to understand emotions creates humor while emphasizing that strength does not equal maturity.
  • Tradition versus modernization: The Dance of Gratitude represents an ancient cultural tradition that has been reduced from a communal religious practice to a rare theatrical attraction.
  • Online identity and real-world consequences: Umbreon’s online boasting escalates into a face-to-face challenge, showing how internet arguments can lead to real confrontations.
  • Pride and reputation: Both Umbreon and Hongye are motivated by the need to defend their status and prove themselves.
  • Prejudice against Dark-type Pokémon: Hongye rejects the common association between Dark-type Pokémon and evil, revealing his desire to redefine their image.

Character Interactions

  • Heiduo coaches Charmander during its failed battle with Riolu, then comforts it after the loss.
  • Charmander punishes Heiduo playfully by pinching his ear, while Heiduo apologizes and reassures it.
  • Umbreon tries to persuade Heiduo to attend the theater without initially revealing its online dispute, then confesses when Heiduo sees through its motives.
  • Heiduo responds leniently, agreeing to attend because Umbreon’s claims were largely accurate and because he is curious about the historic dance.
  • Hongye argues with Umbreon online and arranges an in-person confrontation, waiting at the theater with Murkrow to battle Heiduo’s side.
  • Hongye’s mother worries about his waiting outside but trusts his ability as an Elite Trainer and urges him to enter before the performance begins.

Ch. 275Furious

Chapter Summary: “Furious”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Heiduo confronts Hongye, the Trainer known online as “Flying Doduo,” outside Ecruteak Dance Theater. Hongye had challenged Heiduo’s claims on the Trainer Forum and expected to expose him as a liar.
  • Hongye demands proof of Heiduo’s portable computer, expensive Pokémon food, and rare Pokémon. Heiduo explains that the computer is in his room and the food has already been eaten, which seems to confirm Hongye’s suspicions.
  • When Hongye asks to see Heiduo’s Pokémon, Heiduo releases Riolu. Riolu’s rarity immediately proves that Heiduo’s online claims were genuine.
  • Hongye is humiliated and speechless, realizing that his certainty about people lying on the internet has led him to misjudge Heiduo. Umbreon finds his embarrassment hilarious, while Heiduo deliberately enjoys teasing him.
  • Hongye recovers enough confidence to challenge Heiduo to a full six-on-six battle. Heiduo accepts but postpones it because he has a Gym challenge the next day. They arrange to battle at the theater two days later.
  • Hongye angrily enters the theater, concealing what happened from his mother by pretending that he is simply happy.
  • Heiduo buys a ticket and enters the theater to watch the Dance of Gratitude. The theater is modest and sparsely attended, reflecting the performance’s reputation as an expensive attraction that many visitors find dull.
  • As the performance begins, five geisha appear onstage with Flareon, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Espeon, and Umbreon. Their costumes match the Pokémon, and they carry traditional Kagura Bells.

Character Developments

  • Heiduo remains calm, confident, and amused throughout the confrontation. He is comfortable proving himself and shows a mischievous side by intentionally embarrassing Hongye.
  • Hongye changes from an overconfident “detective” determined to expose Heiduo into a deeply embarrassed but competitive Trainer. Although humiliated, he turns the situation into motivation for a serious battle challenge.
  • Umbreon acts as an enthusiastic spectator, enjoying the confrontation like entertainment and laughing openly at Hongye’s humiliation.
  • Riolu demonstrates its alertness and fighting spirit by immediately assuming that Murkrow’s appearance signals an impending battle.
  • Hongye’s mother notices her son’s distress but respects his reluctance to explain, showing a caring relationship beneath the comedic scene.

Significant Themes

  • Truth versus online deception: The confrontation highlights how easily people lie or exaggerate online, while also showing that genuine achievements can be difficult to believe without evidence.
  • Pride and humiliation: Hongye’s confidence collapses when his assumptions are disproven, but his pride pushes him to respond through a formal battle challenge.
  • Competition as motivation: Rather than ending the conflict in anger, both Trainers convert their dispute into a future test of strength.
  • Cultural tradition and spectacle: The Dance of Gratitude introduces Johto’s traditional theater and the contrast between historical cultural significance and modern audiences’ limited interest.

Character Interactions

  • Heiduo and Umbreon share a teasing but affectionate dynamic, with Umbreon enjoying the drama and Heiduo restraining it from mocking Hongye too openly.
  • Heiduo and Hongye’s hostile online argument becomes an awkward face-to-face encounter, with Heiduo’s calm answers undermining Hongye’s accusations.
  • Riolu’s immediate focus on Murkrow signals the competitive tension between the two Trainers.
  • Hongye’s interaction with his mother shows that, despite his anger and embarrassment, he does not want to worry her.
  • The chapter ends by shifting attention from the confrontation to Heiduo’s first impressions of the traditional Pokémon performance.

Ch. 276The Item That Calls Legendary Pokémon

Chapter Summary: “The Item That Calls Legendary Pokémon”

Plot Points and Events

  • Heiduo learns that the Kagura Bells used in Ecruteak City’s Dance of Gratitude may possess the power to summon Ho-Oh and Lugia when enough bells are played together. He compares them to a massive summoning device and wonders about their connection to the Tidal Bell and Clear Bell.
  • Although tempted by the possibility of obtaining or controlling Legendary Pokémon, Heiduo decides he is not yet strong enough to pursue them and resolves to improve gradually.
  • During the Dance of Gratitude, the bells produce a calming, almost magical effect. A faint light appears to spread from the bells into the audience.
  • The audience reacts differently: many people and Pokémon fall asleep or enter a deeply relaxed state, while Heiduo remains unusually clear-headed and peaceful. He suspects the bells’ effects vary depending on the individual.
  • The next morning, Heiduo discovers that the restful effects of the performance lasted through the night. His Pokémon are exceptionally energetic and train with unusual enthusiasm.
  • The entire team’s Energy Levels increase simultaneously, producing stat improvements comparable to using Rare Candies. Heiduo becomes extremely pleased with the value of the Dance of Gratitude and the money he spent attending it.
  • Heiduo and Umbreon explore Ecruteak City in search of food. They admire the city’s traditional architecture, canals, gardens, wild Pokémon, and peaceful coexistence between humans and Pokémon.
  • They eat at a popular local izakaya, enjoying regional dishes such as tea noodles, tofu hot pot, sushi, and colorful dumplings. Heiduo also buys local snacks for later.
  • After eating and feeding his hungry Pokémon, Heiduo heads toward Ecruteak Gym, excited for his upcoming Gym battle.

Character Development

  • Heiduo shows practical restraint. Though fascinated by the possibility of summoning Ho-Oh and Lugia, he recognizes the danger of chasing Legendary Pokémon before he has the strength to handle them.
  • Heiduo becomes more observant and analytical, carefully comparing the Dance of Gratitude’s effects on himself, the audience, and his Pokémon.
  • His appreciation for Ecruteak City reveals his idealistic side. He longs for a world where humans and Pokémon coexist peacefully and choose one another freely.
  • Umbreon is portrayed as lazy, food-loving, and heavily attached to entertainment. It sleeps through much of the bells’ effect, wakes refreshed, complains about hunger, and eagerly eats at the izakaya.
  • Heiduo’s Pokémon benefit significantly from the performance, becoming more energetic and advancing together in strength.

Significant Themes

  • Power and responsibility: Legendary Pokémon may be attainable, but Heiduo understands that possessing power does not mean being ready to control it.
  • The mysterious influence of music and tradition: The bells affect minds, emotions, sleep, and even Pokémon development, suggesting that ancient rituals possess real supernatural power.
  • Growth through patience: Rather than seeking shortcuts through Legendary Pokémon, Heiduo chooses steady training and preparation.
  • Harmony between humans and Pokémon: Ecruteak City represents Heiduo’s ideal Pokémon world, where people, nature, and Pokémon coexist without unnecessary conflict.
  • Reality versus idealism: Heiduo acknowledges that this peaceful vision resembles the anime world more than the harsher reality he inhabits.

Character Interactions

  • Heiduo observes the audience’s varied reactions to the Dance of Gratitude and questions Umbreon about falling asleep during it.
  • Heiduo and Umbreon discuss their differing experiences of the bells: Heiduo feels calm and alert, while Umbreon becomes sleepy.
  • Heiduo encourages his Pokémon during training and is delighted by their collective improvement.
  • Heiduo drags Umbreon out to find food instead of allowing it to order takeout, leading to their exploration of Ecruteak City.
  • Umbreon focuses on food and entertainment while Heiduo reflects on the city’s beauty and ideals, highlighting their contrasting personalities.

Ch. 277Riolu's Talent

Chapter Summary: “Riolu’s Talent”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Morty returns to Ecruteak Gym after completing a paid rescue mission in Blackthorn City, where he helped recover an abducted Ledian. The reward barely covers the Gym’s monthly expenses.
  • Immediately upon returning, Morty learns that two Trainers are scheduled to challenge him. After bathing, he begins the afternoon battle against Heiduo, a polite Trainer from Sinnoh who already possesses four badges.
  • The Gym battle is set as a three-on-three match. Morty may not switch Pokémon, while Heiduo is allowed to switch freely.
  • Morty sends out Haunter, while Heiduo chooses Riolu. Morty is unfamiliar with Riolu and suspects it may be a Pokémon from Sinnoh.
  • Heiduo begins with Foresight, allowing Riolu’s Fighting-type attacks to affect the Ghost-type Haunter normally.
  • Morty responds with a practiced combination of Confuse Ray and Shadow Punch. He expects Riolu either to be confused by the ray or to be unable to avoid Shadow Punch while keeping its eyes closed.
  • Heiduo orders Riolu to shut its eyes, but Riolu dodges Shadow Punch through its natural ability to sense the attack’s energy. It also avoids the returning Shadow Punch when Haunter redirects it.
  • Morty is stunned, initially believing Riolu has used Foresight twice. Heiduo explains that Riolu’s unusual talent is Aura, which allows it to sense incoming move energy even without relying on sight.
  • The chapter ends with Morty recognizing that Haunter’s usual strategy has been neutralized and deciding that Haunter should fight Riolu directly at close range.

Character Developments

  • Morty: He is portrayed as hardworking but financially strained, frequently taking outside jobs to support the Gym. Despite his fatigue and initial irritation at having to battle immediately, he remains professional and becomes increasingly impressed by Heiduo’s manners and Riolu’s abilities. His confidence in Haunter’s signature strategy is shaken when Riolu counters it.
  • Heiduo: He is introduced as respectful, patient, and tactically competent. Though he has waited for hours, he does not complain and focuses immediately on the battle. His willingness to explain Riolu’s ability rather than exploit Morty’s confusion demonstrates humility and sportsmanship.
  • Riolu: Riolu’s defining talent is revealed: it can use Aura to detect the energy of attacks while its eyes are closed. However, its ability is still underdeveloped; it can sense moves but cannot yet perceive living beings or accurately “see” the battlefield like a highly trained Lucario.
  • Haunter: Haunter is experienced and clever, using a deceptive multi-step Shadow Punch strategy. However, its normal advantage against Fighting-type Pokémon is weakened by Foresight and Riolu’s Aura.

Significant Themes

  • Talent versus experience: Riolu’s natural Aura allows it to overcome Haunter’s superior level and battle experience, though the narration emphasizes that talent must be developed through training.
  • Adaptation and counterstrategy: The battle highlights the importance of responding to an opponent’s abilities rather than relying blindly on familiar techniques.
  • Professionalism and mutual respect: Morty and Heiduo quickly develop respect for one another because both value efficiency, courtesy, and fair competition.
  • The limits of appearances and assumptions: Morty initially assumes Riolu will be vulnerable to Ghost-type tactics, while Heiduo initially regards Morty’s limited selection of Ghost Pokémon as disappointing. Both are forced to reassess their assumptions.
  • Economic pressure and responsibility: Morty’s side work and exhaustion show the burden of maintaining a Gym, contrasting the prestige of being a Gym Leader with the practical difficulties of supporting it.

Character Interactions

  • Morty’s grandmother warmly manages the Gym and reminds him not to overexert himself, showing their supportive relationship.
  • Morty and Heiduo begin with mutual courtesy: Morty apologizes for the delay, while Heiduo politely introduces himself and waits without complaint.
  • During the battle, Heiduo’s tactical orders directly challenge Morty’s practiced strategies. Morty attempts to exploit Riolu’s closed eyes, but Riolu’s Aura overturns his expectations.
  • When Morty misunderstands Riolu’s evasion, Heiduo explains the Aura ability instead of leaving him confused, reinforcing the respectful tone between the two Trainers.
  • The battle concludes this section with Morty changing tactics, preparing Haunter for a direct close-range confrontation rather than another trick-based combination.

Ch. 278Turning the Tide

Chapter Summary: “Turning the Tide”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Haunter paralyzes Riolu with Lick, leaving it vulnerable against the much stronger Pokémon.
  • Following Heiduo’s instructions, Riolu uses Endure to survive Haunter’s powerful Shadow Ball attacks with only a sliver of stamina remaining.
  • This strategy is intended to maximize the power of Riolu’s Reversal, whose strength increases as Riolu’s health decreases.
  • Heiduo initially orders Riolu to attack, but Riolu refuses, determined to endure longer and defeat at least one opponent in its first Gym battle.
  • Riolu successfully uses Endure a second time, despite the reduced success rate of repeated use.
  • Morty recognizes the strategy and deliberately has Haunter use a full-power Shadow Punch, effectively allowing Riolu to retaliate.
  • With its last reserves of strength, Riolu withstands the attack, channels Fighting-type energy through Haunter’s Ghost Claw, and unleashes a devastating Reversal.
  • Haunter is knocked unconscious, and Riolu wins despite being more than twenty levels weaker.
  • Riolu gains three levels, and its Friendship with Heiduo rises to 193, bringing it closer to evolution.
  • Heiduo celebrates Riolu’s victory, while Morty praises Haunter and reflects on the responsibilities of a Gym Leader.
  • The chapter concludes by comparing Riolu’s comeback to a famous Pokémon tournament reversal involving a nearly defeated Heracross.

Character Developments

  • Riolu demonstrates extraordinary endurance, determination, and competitive pride. It disobeys Heiduo not out of distrust, but because it wants to prove itself by defeating an opponent.
  • Heiduo shows strong tactical ability and emotional maturity. Although he initially wants Riolu to stop before the danger becomes excessive, he ultimately respects Riolu’s decision and supports it fully.
  • Their relationship deepens as Heiduo accepts Riolu’s independent will rather than treating it as merely a tool for battle.
  • Morty recognizes Heiduo’s strategic skill and Riolu’s exceptional spirit. He also reveals his role as a Gym Leader who evaluates a Trainer’s character, not merely their ability to win.
  • Haunter, despite being used as the sacrificial opponent, fights seriously and is respectfully acknowledged by Morty afterward.
  • Umbreon becomes more impressed by the excitement and emotional intensity of Pokémon battles.

Significant Themes

  • Turning weakness into strength: Riolu’s low health, initially a disadvantage, becomes the source of Reversal’s overwhelming power.
  • Perseverance and willpower: Riolu succeeds because it refuses to collapse even when victory seems impossible.
  • Trust and independence: Heiduo’s bond with Riolu grows when he accepts its decision to continue fighting, allowing it to develop its own battle instincts.
  • The value of defeat and struggle: Morty views battles as tests of character, using victory and defeat to reveal a Trainer’s humility, resilience, and composure.
  • Luck versus skill: The chapter acknowledges that comebacks require luck, but emphasizes that preparation, prediction, strength, and determination are equally important.
  • Mentorship and growth: Heiduo’s encouragement and Morty’s controlled challenge both help Riolu gain experience and confidence.

Character Interactions

  • Heiduo repeatedly encourages Riolu to remain calm and follow their strategy during Haunter’s assault.
  • Riolu’s refusal to retreat initially conflicts with Heiduo’s plan, but Heiduo ultimately validates its choice and orders it to use Endure again.
  • Morty observes and interprets Heiduo’s tactics, realizing that Foresight, Endure, and Reversal were part of a deliberate strategy.
  • Morty assists Riolu’s victory by ordering Haunter to use a full-power Shadow Punch, giving it an opportunity to finish the battle.
  • Afterward, Heiduo embraces and praises Riolu, while Morty respectfully thanks Haunter for its efforts, reinforcing the mutual respect between Trainer, Pokémon, and Gym Leader.

Ch. 279Grovyle Gets Shut Down

Chapter Summary: “Grovyle Gets Shut Down”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Morty sends out a powerful Gastly, while Heiduo chooses Grovyle despite its lower level. Heiduo believes Grovyle’s enhanced stats and moves can compensate for the disadvantage.
  • Grovyle opens with Leech Seed, hoping to wear Gastly down. Morty responds with Night Shade, which deals severe fixed damage based on Gastly’s energy level and nearly overwhelms Grovyle immediately.
  • Heiduo realizes that Gastly’s speed and offensive power make it dangerous, so he orders Agility. Grovyle begins moving too quickly for Gastly to track reliably.
  • Morty counters with Curse, sacrificing half of Gastly’s HP to place a curse on Grovyle that steadily drains its health. Combined with Leech Seed, Gastly appears close to defeat, but Morty remains confident, suggesting he has planned a hidden strategy.
  • Heiduo debates whether Morty is setting up a forced switch, a Destiny Bond trade, or simply bluffing. Rather than continue hesitating, he orders Grovyle to use Leaf Storm, hoping to defeat Gastly before it can execute its plan.
  • Morty reveals the key tactic: when clouds block the sunlight over the gym, Gastly uses its Ghost-type ability, Shadow Infiltration, to vanish into the darkness. It escapes the Leech Seed’s restraints and disappears into the battlefield’s shadows.
  • Heiduo is shocked to realize that the gym’s changing light conditions may have been anticipated by Morty. Gastly, originally trapped in the open arena, now has darkness everywhere to hide in, putting Grovyle at a major disadvantage.

Character Developments

  • Heiduo demonstrates strong tactical awareness but is caught off guard by the combination of Night Shade, Curse, and Gastly’s hidden ability. His confidence shifts into suspicion and anxiety as he tries to understand Morty’s plan.
  • Heiduo’s tendency to overthink becomes apparent. He spends valuable time analyzing Morty’s motives instead of committing fully to an attack, though he eventually forces himself to act decisively with Leaf Storm.
  • Morty is portrayed as calm, experienced, and strategically deceptive. He allows Gastly to suffer significant damage while concealing the purpose of Curse and waiting for the perfect environmental opportunity.
  • Grovyle proves capable and agile, using Agility to evade Gastly, but its lack of cover on the open battlefield prevents it from fully exploiting its natural strengths.
  • Gastly displays frightening speed, powerful Ghost-type techniques, and a special ability that allows it to disappear into shadows. Despite its fragile defenses, it becomes increasingly difficult to hit.

Significant Themes

  • Strategy over raw power: The battle emphasizes planning, timing, and battlefield control rather than simple strength.
  • Hidden information and deception: Morty’s calm behavior and seemingly reckless use of Curse conceal a larger plan.
  • Environmental advantage: The changing sunlight and sudden darkness transform the battlefield, showing how terrain and conditions can determine the outcome of a fight.
  • Psychological pressure: Heiduo’s uncertainty and Morty’s composure make the battle as much a contest of nerves and interpretation as of attacks.
  • The danger of underestimating fragile opponents: Gastly’s low defenses make it appear vulnerable, but its speed, offensive moves, and abilities allow it to control the battle.

Character Interactions

  • Heiduo and Morty engage in a battle of tactical reading, with Heiduo trying to infer Morty’s intentions from Gastly’s actions and Morty deliberately giving away little.
  • Grovyle’s direct attacks and evasive maneuvers contrast with Gastly’s indirect methods—status effects, fixed damage, curses, and concealment.
  • Umbreon silently observes Heiduo’s growing stress, recognizing that interrupting his concentration could make matters worse.
  • The chapter ends with Heiduo realizing that Morty may have engineered the entire sequence, leaving Grovyle trapped in a battle where Gastly can now hide anywhere.

Ch. 280Sitrus Berries Are Berries, and Bulb Light Is Light (1/4)

Summary

Heiduo becomes trapped in a difficult battle against Morty’s Gastly. Without Leech Seed weakening Gastly, Morty’s strategy is clear: force Heiduo to switch Pokémon or allow Curse to slowly drain Grovyle until it can no longer fight. Gastly hides in the shadows, making direct retaliation nearly impossible, while Ecruteak Gym’s naturally cloudy weather prevents Grovyle from using Synthesis effectively.
Grovyle is close to collapse, with only about a minute and a half before Curse drains the rest of its stamina. Rather than being withdrawn, it communicates its determination to Heiduo through its eyes. Grovyle feels ashamed that it is struggling when Riolu succeeded earlier, but it still wants to win and bring Heiduo honor. Recognizing Grovyle’s trust and refusal to give up, Heiduo regains his confidence and promises that they will win together.
Heiduo realizes that Synthesis could save Grovyle if it received sufficient light. Although the dark clouds block the sun, he remembers that the gym corridor behind him is illuminated by lamps. Exploiting the battle rule that a Pokémon may remain outside the arena for up to thirty seconds before being disqualified, he orders Grovyle to sprint into the corridor. Grovyle breaks through the doors and uses Synthesis under the artificial light while Morty counts down the remaining time.
Grovyle returns just one second before being ruled out of bounds. To Heiduo’s surprise, Synthesis has fully restored its health. Its move unexpectedly levels up from level four to level five during the crisis, increasing both its healing power and absorption speed. At the same time, the clouds begin to part, allowing sunlight to reach part of the battlefield and further weakening Gastly’s advantage.

Character Development and Interactions

  • Heiduo initially feels cornered and regrets not investing in abilities that might have countered Gastly’s strategy. Grovyle’s trust restores his determination, allowing him to think creatively and use the arena’s rules to his advantage.
  • Grovyle shows strong loyalty, pride, and competitive spirit. It refuses to be switched out and communicates its desire to fight through its expression. Its bond with Heiduo deepens as it relies on him to find a solution.
  • Morty demonstrates strategic intelligence by combining Curse, concealment, weather conditions, and pressure to force a switch. However, he also respects Heiduo’s ingenuity and perseverance. Impressed by Heiduo’s refusal to give up and his fair treatment of Grovyle, Morty decides that Heiduo deserves the Phantom Badge regardless of the eventual result.
  • Heiduo and Grovyle share a pivotal moment of mutual trust: Grovyle believes Heiduo can save the battle, while Heiduo accepts responsibility for repaying that faith.
  • Morty and Gastly work as a coordinated team, using an “open” strategy that pressures the opponent while Gastly remains hidden.

Significant Themes

  • Trust between Trainer and Pokémon: The battle emphasizes that Pokémon willingly place their lives in a Trainer’s hands when treated with care and respect.
  • Perseverance under pressure: Both Heiduo and Grovyle refuse to accept an apparently inevitable defeat.
  • Creativity and adaptability: Heiduo escapes the stalemate by reinterpreting the conditions of Synthesis and exploiting the thirty-second out-of-bounds rule.
  • Respect and sportsmanship: Morty values determination, intelligent rule use, and a Trainer’s bond with their Pokémon more than simply winning.
  • Growth at critical moments: Grovyle’s Synthesis levels up during the crisis, symbolizing how effort and desperation can produce sudden breakthroughs.
  • Light versus darkness: The physical return of light represents Heiduo and Grovyle overcoming Gastly’s shadow-based advantage and regaining hope.
