Early life and reputation

Rong Lian is Minister Rong’s gifted concubine-born son. He earned the xiucai degree at fourteen and became known in Shengjing as a scholarly, refined talent. His literary promise earned his father’s attention and personal instruction. 17 23

He initially accepted the widespread accusations against Rong Xi, particularly the alleged coercion of Liang Siwen, and resented his elder brother for the resulting disgrace. Even so, he believed Rong Xi should be guided rather than discarded; he proposed sending a teacher to supervise and educate him. 17

Liang Siwen and the journey to Linxi

Rong Lian shares a close but restrained bond with Liang Siwen. Though he cares deeply for him, he suppresses those feelings because he intends to enter official service and believes he cannot promise a future with another man. Before Liang leaves for Qingzhou, Rong Lian persuades him to show Rong Xi mercy rather than seek violent revenge. 18

After Gao Bai’s letter prompts further conflict with Minister Rong, Rong Lian requests permission to study in Linxi for the provincial examination. He presents the move as both a scholarly retreat and an opportunity to guide Rong Xi, while privately believing their father’s neglect contributed to his elder brother’s behavior. 19 20

Life at the ancestral residence

Rong Lian arrives in Linxi expecting the spoiled and unruly brother he remembers, but is shocked by Rong Xi’s improved appearance, composed bearing, orderly household, and independent livelihood. He offers money and silk after seeing the residence’s hardship; Rong Xi refuses, so Rong Lian begins contributing through household supplies instead. 22 23

Observing Rong Xi’s exercise, medicine regimen, teaching of Liu Zishi, friendships with merchants and craftsmen, and role in local inventions steadily undermines Rong Lian’s belief in the capital’s rumors. He comes to regard Rong Xi as industrious, capable, and sincere. 23 24

Reconciliation

When Liang Siwen writes to reveal that Rong Han coerced Rong Xi through threats involving their birth mother’s keepsake, Rong Lian realizes that the family condemned Rong Xi without hearing his explanation. His former prejudice collapses, and he sincerely apologizes to his elder brother. 26

Rong Xi encourages Rong Lian to pursue official service for himself rather than family glory, and to cherish Liang Siwen rather than surrender to fear of social judgment.
