Background / History

Fu Wutian is the grandson of Old Prince Fu, the emperor's uncle. His father, Fu Xiao, spent his life fighting on the frontier and died on the battlefield; Fu Wutian's mother, a forthright woman from beyond Da Ya's frontier, followed Fu Xiao in death. Fu Wutian was ten when he lost both parents. 43

He spent years commanding troops at the border, where he earned his reputation as Da Ya's undefeated Guardian War God. After returning to Gentlemen City, Emperor Fu Chong granted him the title of Prince Jun. 23

Old Prince Fu had made a marriage agreement with Old Master An ten years earlier, using one half of his late wife Shan Xue's Mandarin Duck Jade Pendant as the token. Fu Wutian knew of the arrangement before An Ziran brought the pendant to Prince Fu's Manor, although he initially allowed An Ziran to struggle to prove it. 25 26

Fu Wutian is a tall, strongly built man with a commanding, martial bearing. His appearance combines the severity of a veteran commander with the heroic looks that made the rumors of his disfigurement collapse once the public saw him at his wedding. 25 38 39

An Yuzhi's Elopement

After An Yuzhi flees because of rumors portraying him as disfigured and cruel, Fu Wutian does not order her capture. Instead, he waits to see how An Ziran resolves the breach of agreement. 33 He rejects An Ziran's proposed cover story because the emperor has approved the marriage and would investigate a sudden cancellation. 35

Marriage to An Ziran

Fu Wutian exploits An Ziran's agreement to let the wedding continue, secretly selecting An Ziran as the replacement groom. He obtains imperial approval, offers An Ziran eventual freedom under a new identity if the marriage fails, and secures An Ziran's reluctant consent. 36
