Ch. 481Genius and Genius
Plot points and events
- The Prix Jacques Le Marois begins with six top milers, including Japanese-trained Mejiro Hōso (Baozuo) and Ireland’s Sky Island. Sky Island’s jockey, Luo Dun, presses forward early, challenging Baozuo and taking the lead.
- Baozuo shows signs of distraction and possible overexcitement, but Yutaka Take keeps him calm with steady rein work. The horse appears to look toward the nearby stands, perhaps using them to stay composed.
- Sky Island sets a modest pace and maintains the lead into the final stretch. Take waits rather than urging Baozuo forward too soon, despite concern from the watching narrator and trainer Ikee.
- With about three hundred meters left, Baozuo accelerates, steadily catches Sky Island, and passes him. He wins the race; Sky Island finishes second, while Starry Bay takes third.
- The victory ends a thirty-one-year wait for a Japan-trained winner of the race and gives Take his first Prix Jacques Le Marois win on his fifth attempt. Take is visibly emotional after the finish.
Character developments
- Baozuo / Mejiro Hōso demonstrates growing composure. Though playful and potentially unsettled, he responds to Take’s guidance and delivers a strong finish against older rivals.
- Yutaka Take shows patience and confidence in his horse, maintaining a calm ride while others worry about the pace. His emotion after the win reveals how meaningful the victory is.
- Sky Island and Luo Dun prove formidable: their early effort puts them in front, and Sky Island fights on courageously despite spending energy setting the pace.
- The narrator shifts from anxious concern about Baozuo’s start and focus to relief and pride as the horse wins.
