Ranch Routine

Warm sunlight spilled across the grass.

Zhang Jun crouched by the fence of the broodmare pasture, holding a carrot as he called softly.

Lasting Peace crouched by his feet, its tail sweeping back and forth across the ground. From time to time, it looked up at its owner before turning to gaze at the six heavily pregnant mares in the pasture.

Ever since learning that Shadow Hunter would have one final battle against Feet on the Ground, the colt had trained as though he had been given a shot of adrenaline. He had become exceptionally diligent, even finishing his meals much faster than usual.

Zhang Jun felt both heartache and relief. Not wanting to disturb him further, he simply came over to check on the grazing mares and the three young foals still being raised.

"Gentle Breeze Arrives, come here. Come on."

Zhang Jun waved toward the mare whose coat had completely turned white.

Gentle Breeze Arrives raised her head, her ears twitching as she slowly ambled over.

Her belly was already enormous, round and drooping low. She had become extremely careful when walking, placing every step with caution.

Thoroughbred horses were pregnant for around eleven months, generally ranging from ten and a half to twelve months. She had been bred in March this year, so her due date would likely fall sometime between early February and late March next year.

After walking for several minutes, Gentle Breeze Arrives finally reached the pasture gate.

Smiling, Zhang Jun stroked her forehead and ears before holding the carrot to her mouth.

Gentle Breeze Arrives took it between her lips and began crunching away.

Lasting Peace curiously edged closer. Gentle Breeze Arrives lowered her head, looked at the little yellow-and-white fellow, and snorted.

Startled, Lasting Peace backed up two steps and barked twice.
