Background / History

Zhang Jun selected the two-year-old chestnut colt at Jianzhou Ranch after the racing system identified his D-ranked speed, dual ◎ aptitude for turf and dirt, flexible running style, and offspring-production rating of seven. Zhang valued him not only as a racer, but as a future foundation stallion for the ranch he hoped to establish. 2

After purchasing him, Zhang registered the colt under the name Shadow Hunter. The name represented Zhang’s intention to confront the grief and emotional “shadows” left by his father’s death. Shadow Hunter became Zhang’s first officially registered racehorse. 3 4

Zhang chose Lin Zhi as Shadow Hunter’s trainer after personally inspecting several facilities and finding Lin’s stable clean, well-managed, and suitable for the colt’s welfare. The horse began formal pre-race training in late August, with Shan Yao selected as his jockey. 5 6 10
