Zhang Jun selected the two-year-old chestnut colt at Jianzhou Ranch after the racing system identified his D-ranked speed, dual ◎ aptitude for turf and dirt, flexible running style, and offspring-production rating of seven. Zhang valued him not only as a racer, but as a future foundation stallion for the ranch he hoped to establish. 2

After purchasing him, Zhang registered the colt under the name Shadow Hunter. The name represented Zhang’s intention to confront the grief and emotional “shadows” left by his father’s death. Shadow Hunter became Zhang’s first officially registered racehorse. 3 4

Zhang chose Lin Zhi as Shadow Hunter’s trainer after personally inspecting several facilities and finding Lin’s stable clean, well-managed, and suitable for the colt’s welfare. The horse began formal pre-race training in late August, with Shan Yao selected as his jockey. 5 6 10

After his unbeaten two-year-old campaign, Shadow Hunter entered the Eight Min Local Triple Crown period as a three-year-old. Lin Zhi planned a deliberately conservative schedule centered on a March warm-up, the Eight Min Derby in May, and the Huaxia Breeders Series in October, with long recovery intervals prioritized over frequent starts. 47

His subsequent performances carried him from local racing into Central Graded Stakes and overseas competition. Personality

Shadow Hunter is intelligent, responsive, and highly competitive. He reacts quickly to rider signals, adjusts to changing race situations, and has shown confidence even when Shan Yao hesitated during the Banyan Tree Stakes. 11 28

Away from racing, he is openly affectionate and food-motivated. He greets Zhang Jun by nuzzling him, searches his pockets for sugar cubes or homemade treats, and can become comically displeased when none are available. 10 28 40

He is also social with horses he knows well. During his winter turnout, he immediately reunited and played with Jianzhou Warrior, his childhood companion from the same grazing field. 40

Shadow Hunter possesses an unusually fierce desire to win. Following his dead heat in the Eight Min Derby, he became withdrawn and distressed because he mistakenly believed he had lost to Feet on the Ground; he calmed only after Zhang Jun explained that they were co-champions. 69

Racing Career

In the CN3 Banyan Tree Stakes, he broke poorly and settled eighth. Shan Yao trusted his response on the reins, moved him forward through the turns, and released his full acceleration in the stretch. Shadow Hunter overtook the leaders decisively and was eased again once no rival could challenge him. 28 29

His third start was the Eight Min Two-Year-Old Championship: Dirt Race. Excited before the race, he broke late on a heavy track; Shan Yao converted the setback into a closing strategy. Shadow Hunter advanced from thirteenth, erased Nangozi’s substantial lead, and won through the rain. 38 39

Following the championship, he returned to Jianzhou Ranch for two months of turnout and recovery. He remained healthy, spent his days grazing and resting with Jianzhou Warrior, and later resumed preparation for his Classic season. 40 47

In the Eight Min Dirt Champions Cup, his Grade One debut, Shadow Hunter made an unexpectedly explosive break and led at an extreme pace. Though exhaustion allowed Undefeated Myth and Feet on the Ground to close in late, his exclusive skill activated after he was passed, allowing him to reclaim the lead and defeat Feet on the Ground by a neck. 111 113

At the Yasuda Memorial in Tokyo, Shadow Hunter was boxed in near the leaders for much of the race. Shan Yao conserved his strength behind Red Agate until a gap opened with 400 meters remaining; Shadow Hunter then accelerated through the opening and won, while stablemate Cloudstream Flying Shadow completed Zhang Jun’s one-two finish. 140 141

• Zhang Jun — Owner and primary caretaker. Shadow Hunter was Zhang’s first registered racehorse and responds to him with nuzzles, playful pocket-searching, and obvious excitement over treats.
