Ch. 21Founding Celebration Venue
Plot and key events
- Zhang Jun arrives in the capital with the Luo family and visits the Central Racecourse during the National Day holiday.
- He watches a three-year-old conditions race and is impressed by Prelude to Water Melody, whose speed matches Shadow Hunter’s. Zhang recognizes how much Shadow Hunter still has to develop.
- The Founding Celebration Turf Middle-Distance Championship features top Huaxia horses against six accomplished foreign runners. The race ends in a dead heat between France’s Golden Cathedral and Huaxia’s Snow-Stepping Pegasus, with defending champion Clear Skies for Miles finishing third.
- Inspired by the elite horses, Zhang resolves to breed horses of comparable—and ultimately greater—quality.
- Over the next four days, he watches several championship races. The chapter then turns to the Turf Mile Champions Race, where Jianzhou Ranch’s former horse, West River Moon, is among the leading contenders.
- Zhang visits West River Moon in the stables and sees that the four-year-old is at his peak, with A+ speed and S+ burst. West River Moon was sold under a buyback agreement and is due to return to Jianzhou Ranch as a breeding stallion after retirement.
- In the owners’ box, Luo Heng anxiously asks whether West River Moon can win. The race’s outcome is not yet revealed.
Character developments and interactions
- Zhang Jun grows more aware of the exceptional standard of elite racing and of Shadow Hunter’s current limitations. Watching the championship also strengthens his ambition to breed outstanding horses.
- Luo Heng is visibly nervous about West River Moon’s prospects and concerned with the horse’s performance and future.
- Zhang and the Luo family travel and attend the races together; Zhang also visits West River Moon with Luo Fei and the others.
- West River Moon’s importance is tied to Jianzhou Ranch’s history: he is expected to succeed his sire, Jianzhou Gentleman, whose former role as the ranch’s main turf stallion is currently filled by the less successful Jianzhou Vanguard.
Significant themes
- Competition and national pride: The middle-distance championship frames the contest as Huaxia against foreign challengers, culminating in a dramatic dead heat.
- Ambition and growth: Zhang’s exposure to elite horses fuels his goal of breeding even better ones, while Shadow Hunter is presented as a horse with room to mature.
- Legacy and breeding: West River Moon’s promised return to Jianzhou Ranch links racing success to the long-term work of sustaining and improving bloodlines.
- Peak performance and time: The contrast between West River Moon, at his peak, and Moonlight, whose peak may have passed, highlights the importance of timing in a racehorse’s career.
