Background / History

Roy grew up at Wool’s Orphanage in London, where he became the informal leader of many younger children. He scavenged abandoned sites for machinery, repaired discarded objects, and built improvised gadgets from salvaged parts. Though he acted dismissive toward the other orphans, he protected Kyle and Jack during a factory raid and secretly healed Kyle’s injured leg. 1

He retains memories of a previous life as a military medic, special-operations agent, and fighter pilot associated with GTI, Azshara, Havoc, and wartime combat. Those memories leave him distrustful of war, uncertain about justice, and burdened by grief for comrades and a daughter he lost. 1 2 8

Dumbledore personally recruited Roy for Hogwarts after identifying his uncontrolled magic. Roy initially threatened him with a dagger, believing Rose had been drugged and that he might be targeted for exploitation, but accepted once he learned Hogwarts would provide housing, food, supplies, and financial support. 2

Before school, Roy rapidly taught himself first-year spellwork, alchemy, Apparition theory, and forbidden Dark-magic theory. He avoided openly testing the most unethical material, but retained the books for research. He also spent much of his savings buying supplies and pocket money for the children at Wool’s Orphanage before departing for Hogwarts. 5 9 10

At Hogwarts, Roy chose Hufflepuff rather than Gryffindor because he wanted to remain with Cedric Diggory and uphold his oath not to let others be left behind. The Sorting Hat’s attempt to tempt him with Gryffindor’s inheritance ended with the Sword of Gryffindor falling onto his head. 14 15

Appearance

Roy is a short, blond-haired boy frequently associated with green clothing and improvised field gear. His outwardly harmless or comical presentation often clashes with his combat instincts and magical power.

  • Usually wears green trousers and a green jacket. 2 6
  • Carries a handmade chest rig, backpack, waist pouch, wand, and dagger. 2 6 7
  • Has blond hair, which Tonks repeatedly ruffles while teasing him. 32 38
  • Is variously described as handsome, awkward-looking, and possessing a deliberately unserious expression. 1 2

Personality

Roy is resourceful, practical, and intensely curious. He approaches magical society as unexplored territory full of knowledge, useful materials, and potential inventions. His collecting habit extends from scrap machinery and magical artifacts to books, potion ingredients, and ideas for large projects. 1 9 20 49

He is protective toward children and friends, particularly the orphans from Wool’s Orphanage. He gives away food, treats Mia’s illness, promises to write home, and spends his savings helping the other children prepare for school. 1 2 8 10

Roy’s humor is teasing, boastful, and frequently ill-timed. His mockery of Aisling begins a prolonged conflict, while his arguments with Snape and public taunting of Slytherin repeatedly escalate tensions. 12 34 41 45

Beneath the playful persona, Roy is suspicious, calculating, and capable of severe violence. He uses ambush tactics, Dark magic, memory alteration, and intimidation against opponents he considers dangerous or cruel. His stated creed is: help those who deserve help, save those who deserve saving, and kill those who deserve killing. 7 32 34

  • Allows accelerated potion brewing through direct perception of magical changes. 25 26
  • May enable advanced wandless and nonverbal magic. 5 43
  • Carries a major risk: excessive Ancient Magic can erode the wielder’s emotions. 38

Smoke Magic

Roy can create thick smoke without conventional preparation.

  • Used it to disorient factory guards and rescue Kyle and Jack. 1
  • Uses it as cover for ambushes and escape in Knockturn Alley. 7
  • Can employ it without a wand. 2

Healing Magic

Roy can produce green healing magic that does not appear tied to a conventional spell category.

  • Also reduces Thorn’s lingering injuries from Dark magic. 30

Transfiguration and Alchemy

Roy combines Transfiguration, alchemy, and rune-like design work to create unusually sophisticated magical objects.

  • Performed Permanent Transfiguration on a matchstick, producing an engraved golden needle. 23 24
  • Creates enchanted accessories that glow, return to the owner, release smoke, or produce small flames. 10 11
  • Animated playing cards with miniature Dumbledore and McGonagall figures. 21
  • Plans the Mendelbrick Project, an alchemical encyclopedia intended to scan, record, categorize, and organize magical knowledge. 20

  • Can multitask with several ingredients at once. 25
  • Studies potion theory independently but lacks the money to freely purchase ingredients for practice. 49

Combat and Tactics

Roy relies on prior-life combat experience, unconventional methods, and overwhelming magical power.

  • Favors a dagger in close quarters and regards it as more reliable than a wand in dangerous environments. 2 7
  • Uses smoke, stealth, dead ends, disarming, and ambushes against hostile wizards. 7
  • Casts powerful defensive barriers and can reflect hostile spells. 32
  • Uses wandless Dark magic in combat. 32
  • Created the Duel Cage, an ancient enclosed arena that disrupts magical circulation. 47 48
  • Is talented but still outmatched by Elias Thorn’s experience and refined Auror combat training. 47 48

Flying

Roy is an unusually skilled broom flyer despite initial disinterest in Quidditch.

  • Uses former-life fighter-pilot experience to rapidly master broom control. 43
  • Wins a multi-house race on an inferior Cleansweep 86 through cornering, shortcuts, and tactical risks. 44 45
  • Synchronizes with his broom to produce a burst of speed beyond its expected capability. 45
  • Survives a high-speed fall after the race without visible injury. 45

Mechanical and Survival Skills

Roy’s scavenging and prior-life training give him skills uncommon among first-year students.

  • Repairs and sells mechanical objects, including a watch worth more than Richard initially realized. 6
  • Builds a secret base, the Special Operations Office, in the Forbidden Forest. 27 35 42
  • Uses magic for logging, construction, preservation, gardening, and material processing. 27 42
  • Picks physical locks to bypass magical anti-theft protections. 49
