Background

The Su Household had long-standing ties to Jiang Xuan’s family. It had previously supported Jiang Quan, Jiang Xuan’s father, as a recruited follower; Jiang Quan later died protecting the household during a demonic attack. Afterward, the Su Household paid the Jiang family a pension and offered Jiang Xuan a place as Su Linyin’s follower. 10

Jiang Xuan repeatedly rejected that arrangement, refusing to become dependent on the Su Household. Su Linyin initially considered recruiting him anyway, but judged him too proud and unwilling to submit to discipline after he did not appear to meet her during her visit to Green Bamboo Town. 10 16

Appearance

Su Linyin is presented as a young woman of delicate elegance. Her cultivated poise is reinforced by a graceful, composed public manner and carefully controlled expressions. 16 17 21

Personality

Su Linyin is highly conscious of rank, reputation, and the practical value of allies. She initially treats Jiang Xuan’s refusal to submit as evidence of arrogance and poor discipline, then tries to turn his transfer to Dong Hao into political capital for herself. 16 17

She is adaptable rather than blindly hostile. Once Jiang Xuan earns his Excellent rating, she immediately recognizes that his assistance could substantially improve her own chances of entering the inner sect; she orders Pan Yue to apologize and attempts to reopen relations with Jiang Xuan. 21

Her courtesy often conceals calculation. She apologizes for Pan Yue’s conduct, warns Jiang Xuan that Dong Hao may be using him, and offers cooperation with the Su Household—an offer Jiang Xuan rejects because he sees the same attempt to use his strength. 26

Story Role

Initial recruitment attempt

Su Linyin is the intended patron Jiang Xuan refuses to follow. Although becoming her follower would provide protection and cultivation resources, Jiang Xuan rejects the arrangement because of his father’s fate and his own determination not to become another household’s appendage. 10

After deciding Jiang Xuan is not worth recruiting, Su Linyin publicly frames him as talent she has voluntarily yielded to Dong Hao. Her goal is to make Dong Hao owe the Su Household a favor while preserving a courteous relationship with Jiang Xuan. 16 17

Reassessment after Jiang Xuan’s breakthrough

Su Linyin remains silent when her follower Pan Yue insults Jiang Xuan for approaching the front section of the academy. Jiang Xuan’s subsequent confirmation of an Excellent rating shocks her into recognizing his value; she orders Pan Yue to apologize, but Jiang Xuan ignores her. 21

She later personally apologizes and proposes cooperation for the second assessment. Her warning that Dong Hao may sacrifice Jiang Xuan’s prospects is accurate in principle, but Jiang Xuan declines because Dong Hao had previously provided real support while the Su Household had not. 26

Continuing Su Household strategy

Following Jiang Xuan’s rise, Su Wanyi plans to let the pressure of the second assessment make him seek the Su Household’s support voluntarily. Su Linyin shares her mother’s confidence that Jiang Xuan will eventually need an alternative to Dong Hao. 26

The Su Household later renovates Jiang Xuan’s home and provides servants for Shen Yuerong. Su Linyin separately warns Jiang Xuan that students who received only Good evaluations resent the earlier Excellent-rated students and hope to displace them in the second assessment. 43
