Background / History

Childhood Betrothal and Family Poison

Dugu Yan’s childhood engagement to Yun Duo was arranged by Dugu Bo and Yun Duo’s late grandfather. She grew up alongside Yun Duo, Ye Lingling, and the Shui sisters, becoming part of the trusted household to whom Yun Duo disclosed his divine inheritance 3 18 130.

Her inherited Jade Phosphor Serpent Martial Soul gradually poisoned its own wielder. Dugu Bo concealed this danger from her until Yun Duo identified a possible cure at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. Yan pressed her grandfather for the truth and learned that the same poison had killed both of her parents 28 29 30 31.

Cure and Martial Soul Evolution

Yun Duo selected Earth Dragon Golden Melons to eliminate the Dugu family’s poison and evolve their Martial Souls. He also chose an Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid to improve Yan’s strength and talent. Although Dugu Bo initially preferred direct consumption over experimental pill refinement, the Goddess of Life subsequently supplied prepared pills to the group 30 31 38.

Yan’s Jade Phosphor Serpent evolved into the Emerald Sacred Dragon rather than the venomous dragon form obtained by her grandfather. The evolution removed her poison attributes, transformed her existing Soul Skills, and allowed her to abandon poison-based control combat for an assault-oriented style 43 44.

Sunset Forest Soul Ring Hunt

To test her new Martial Soul, Yan fought a 3,100-year-old Azure Sky Vine with Ye Lingling providing amplification, healing, and Soul Power restoration. After two and a half hours, they reduced it to the brink of death, allowing Lingling to finish it and obtain her third Soul Ring 52 53 54.

Life in Skywater City

Yan transferred to Skywater/Tianshui Advanced Soul Master Academy and treated Yun Duo’s residence as her home during his prolonged seclusion. At its entrance, she confronted Yu Xiaogang when he attempted to appoint himself as her and Yun Duo’s master. His conventional Soul Ring limits failed to impress her: both she and Lingling had already absorbed third rings older than 3,100 years 86 87.

After absorbing her Hundred Thousand Year Soul Bones, she reached the Five-Ring Quasi-Soul Emperor stage and later became a Six-Ring Soul Emperor.
